Description

We are seeking a Senior Hardware Development Manager, to join our Grocery Robotics and Automation Systems Team. Senior Technical Managers at Amazon, work on real-world problems on a global scale, own their mechanisms end to end, and influence the direction of our technology that impacts hundreds of millions of customers around the world. Key job responsibilities

Responsibilities include collection of business and systems requirements from internal and external stakeholders, writing design specifications, developing stakeholder feedback-loops from design to release, and managing the system functionality. You are able to decompose significantly complex problems into straight-forward solutions. You consistently bring strong, data-driven business, and technical judgment to decisions. You will be expected to make appropriate trade-offs to minimize impacts, clearly communicate goals, roles, responsibilities, and desired outcomes to internal cross-functional and remote project teams. As a trusted part of the technical leadership team, you are a key influencer in planning strategy, bringing business and industry context to technology decisions. You set the standard for engineering excellence in your organization.

The desired candidate will possess a strong program management and technology design background, have demonstrated experience leading large-scale standardization efforts of end-to-end automation solutions. You will need to develop new mechanisms to scale designs, nurture relationships across teams, and successfully align senior stakeholders on joint goals. Additional responsibilities include leading benchmark initiatives across the organization, writing project documentation, driving project schedules and developing strategic roadmaps. A successful candidate for this position has an ability to drive action across cross-function teams through influence and deliver a cohesive product that satisfies all stakeholders. This role will require travel, up to 50% each year.

A day in the life

• Directly manage a group of hardware, electrical, and system development engineers, hiring, promotion, performance assessments etc.

• As a leader of leaders, you take the time to grow successful senior engineers and managers through collaborative development planning, coaching, and strategic project assignment.

• Work closely with engineers to develop tools (software and/or hardware) to accelerate the deployment of robotic technologies. Review both design specs and code and provide feedback to engineers to insist on highest standards in terms of system design and code quality.

• Partner with Technical Program Managers, Reality Capture Managers, Deployment Engineers, Solutions Designers, and Peer Managers to identify new features or products that can bring substantial benefits for customers. Prioritize feature requests to maximize contributions to our goals while maintaining the right trade-off between addressing tactical needs versus investing in strategic solutions.

• Translate business requirements into engineering requirements to scope resource needs and manage multiple projects and dependencies effectively to deliver projects on schedule. Lead sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives to assign work, monitor progress, and collect feedback.

• Drive operations excellence by analyzing ticket root causes, defects, and technical debt and creating projects to reduce both short-term and long-term operational load.

About the team

The Grocery Robotics and Automation Systems Team develops, communicates, and executes engineering designs, processes, and innovations linked to Amazon’s grocery network business goals. Our road map focuses on systematically improving every aspect of the Amazon Grocery Fulfillment from our customers to associate experience with our designs focusing on safety, costs, storage, throughput capacity, speed, flexibility, scalability, sustainability, operational performance and reliability. We own a number of key engineering/automation systems including: Sortation, Manipulation, Transport, Storage, etc. Our team members possess deep design experience and innovation skill-sets in these technical areas. We work closely with internal partner teams in all geographies to align priorities, eliminate duplication or waste.



Qualifications

• Bachelor’s of Science or a related technical field

• 10+ years relevant work experience in engineering operations

• 10+ years work experience in engineering, product development or manufacturing with highly automated systems and robotics.

• Experience with integrating new systems into new and existing work environments.

• Experience leading technical teams that manage large scale cross functional teams influencing, negotiating, and communicating across multiple organization levels.

• Industrial experience working with cross functional teams and to develop solutions

• Experience in writing theories and concepts into practical applications and mechanisms.



Extended Qualifications

• 15+ years of Engineering System Design Management experience

• Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Engineering or related technical field

• 7+ years of experience with failure analysis activities and root cause analysis.

• 7+ years of experience with accelerated life testing (ALT, ESS, HALT/HASS).

• New product prototyping/testing lab experience

• Automation system integration experience

• Demonstrated skills leading and influencing global business partners

• Working knowledge of OSHA, CFR, RIA

• Working knowledge with analytical problem solving methodologies and programs

• Working knowledge of Analytical Problem solving tools including Statistical Hypothesis testing, Six Sigma, Simulation, Queuing Analysis

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $161,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $279,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
