OverviewThe AI Frameworks team at Microsoft builds the foundational software that powers advanced machine learning across all major Microsoft products—including Windows, Office, Bing, and more. Our work bridges the latest AI models and diverse hardware, enabling seamless AI experiences from supercomputers to mobile devices.
The Senior or Principal Build Engineer- AI Infrastructure role targets build and release management engineers. As a member of the Engineering Systems team, you will focus on CICD (Continuous Integration Continuous Delivery), build efficiency and speed, packaging, cloud security, and package deployment. You will provide workflow improvements and stability to enable the AI Frameworks team to do more, faster, and with high confidence across an array of hardware SKUs and programming languages.
This is a technical role: it requires hands-on design and development skills. We seek candidates with hands-on experience building and maintaining infrastructure for large-scale C++ and/or Python projects ideally hosted in Github or Azure DevOps.

Responsibilities
As a build engineer, the common tasks of the job would include, but not be limited to:
Design, develop, and maintain packaging systems and infrastructure for maintainable and secure releases.
Design, develop, and maintain build infrastructure for correctness, speed, and developer productivity.
Define guidelines and best practices for organizing mono-repos as well as multi-repos for day-to-day workflows as well as release cycles.
Design, develop, and maintain CICD workflows in Azure DevOps and Github.
Maintain and update fleets of underlying infrastructure for different hardware SKUs to run automation workloads on.
Mentor and guide engineers to produce extensible, maintainable code used across Microsoft.
Proactively seeking new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale and shares knowledge with other engineers.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or preferred qualifications
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, or Python
OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
Experience generating and releasing public nuget, pypi, npm, dpkg, or rpm packages.
Experience with governance for ensuring a secure supply chain for package generation.
CICD experience in Github or Azure Devops across a number of platforms and hardware configurations.
Experience with build optimization for python and C++ projects.
Experience with design and implementation of large CMake projects.
Experience with docker and dockerization.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Software Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $165,600 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
