Applied Scientist are involved in advancing the state-of-the-art in AI and research. They are responsible for researching and developing an understanding of innovative tools, technologies, and methods that can be applied to improve product quality, performance, or efficiency. This role is pivotal in contributing knowledge around specialized tools and methods to support business impact, and serves as an expert in deeply specialized areas. Applied Scientists in this role are also involved in capability management and networking, reinforcing a positive environment, and contributing to publications on research finding.

Fosters partnerships across Microsoft and beyond to deliver expertise and technology, bridges research and development to introduce new solutions, and contributes to intellectual property through research publications and technology transfers, all aimed at creating significant business impact. Develops deep expertise in specific research areas and broad knowledge in related fields, applies cutting-edge research and advanced concepts in collaboration with product teams, and contributes specialized knowledge to enhance product quality and business impact. Reviews and prepares data for analysis, ensuring quality and technical standards are met, and assists in developing datasets for machine learning applications, with guidance from senior team members. Implement prototypes of scalable systems in AI applications Designs and utilizes machine learning pipelines for data preparation, and applies advanced algorithms to enhance business solutions, while independently running statistical analyses to validate model assumptions. Contributes to the training and deployment of scalable AI solutions, develops new machine learning improvements, and supports the application of intelligence in real product environments, leveraging large-scale computing frameworks for model enhancement.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Doctorate or currently pusuing) in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience. 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers). Specialized experience in one or more of these areas: Natural Language Understanding, Neural Networks, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Large Language Models, Data Mining, Machine Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence) or related fields Experience with statistical modeling and deep learning especially with frameworks such as PyTorch, Tensorflow or Keras. Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
