We are looking for a Systems Development Engineer to join the Amazon Linux Kernel team. If you are passionate about building the platform to support the world’s premier cloud computing environment, then this is the job for you.

Systems Development Engineers in the team are comfortable navigating Linux distribution development down to the Linux Kernel. They implement and maintain automation that allows the team to reliably build, test, and deploy Linux Kernels. They help diagnose kernel issues, identify and adapt upstream changes to apply them to our builds.

The ideal individual for this role will be comfortable with the Linux Kernel and understand how to develop in languages such as C and Python in a Linux environment. Experience with Linux package management, version control systems, automated build processes, and software unit testing are a must. Knowledge in Linux kernel internals is beneficial for this role. An understanding of and experience in contributing to open source projects is a plus, as many of the activities include an upstream component.

Key job responsibilities

- Development and maintain automation to help deliver secure, stable, and performant Linux kernel builds

- Diagnose Linux Kernel issues and deliver suitable mitigations

- Review code from peers and provide feedback

- Drive operational improvements and influence the team's development roadmap

About the team

The Kernel and Operating System group is responsible for the design and maintenance of all of Amazon's core compute platforms, with a special focus on EC2, the Elastic Compute Cloud that is the basis for much of Amazon Web Services (AWS). We're also responsible for tools associated with the performance characterization, qualification, build and deployment of our Linux platforms.

The Amazon Linux Kernel team is responsible for the providing secure, reliable, robust and performant kernel for EC2 platforms. The Amazon Linux Kernel is our flagship product.

Qualifications

- 4+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience

- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

- 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)

- Experience troubleshooting in a Linux/Unix environment



Extended Qualifications

- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes

- Experience building services using AWS products

- Previous work on Linux distributions, Linux Kernels, containers, deployment systems

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
