As a Senior Systems Development Engineer of the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) team, you will provide expertise to expand solutions that support the backbone of the entire AWS global network. In this role, you will interact with senior applied scientists and engineers to understand requirements and extend platforms that support software-defined networks (SDN). You will grow to lead design reviews, aligning engineering efforts across an organization towards an overall technical strategy. In addition, you will support and scale your solutions to meet the ever-growing demand of customer use.

AWS Global Connectivity and Network Availability (GCNA) is the backbone that connects the global AWS network. It is dedicated to managing the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between Data Centers and customers.

Key job responsibilities

You will be a hands-on technical lead, who is responsible for all phases of the project development cycle. You will work with customers to gather requirements, generate technical designs, and carry the project from implementation through validation and operations. In the role you'll need to lean on your strong leadership and communication skills to mentor other engineers and provide training and support for our technologies. Your experience working in systems development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems.

You’ll also:

• Lead in building complex software systems and successfully delivering them to customers.

• Use your strong problem-solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions.

• Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.

• Write high quality distributed system software.

• Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.

• Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.

• Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your service and, regardless of their source, strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers.

• Contribute to documentation of process and procedures.

• Actively grow the team through supporting candidate interviews.

• Participate in an on-call rotation with your team.

A day in the life

Engineers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range

of responsibilities; we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next-generation platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blueprint allowing our engineers to develop solutions to complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that

look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and

reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of

traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact

to our customers during events.

In this role you:

• Work in a 24x7 team on-call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.

• Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.

• Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.

• Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is

responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide array of networking infrastructure

that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations.

BERE provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a

network that experiences 70% growth annually. In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design and operation of our global corporate office and Data Center network, allowing tens of thousands of Amazonians to perform their daily tasks in support of our customers.

Qualifications

- A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or relevant degree/experience.

- 6+ years of professional software development experience in a similar environment.

- 4+ years of programming/scripting experience with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell or Ruby.

- 4+ years of experience with monitoring, troubleshooting and resolving system and software components.

- 4+ years of experience deploying and operating Linux in an enterprise environment, and a solid grasp on operating system fundamentals.

- 3+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.

- 3+ years of experience working independently as a senior contributor or a lead member in large project teams at other organizations.



Extended Qualifications

- Strong knowledge of system architecture best practice and experience designing with and integrating cloud-based services into production products.

- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.

- Extensive experience with modern software development practices including Agile methodologies and DevOps.

- Experience with Linux containers, Kubernetes, Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is a plus.

- Strong, object-oriented design and coding skills.

- Proven hands-on experience of working with AWS products to deliver software systems.

- Familiarity with building native cloud solutions, asynchronous messaging, and network protocols.

- Strong experience with distributed computing and large-scale systems.

- Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.

- In-depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies.

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.

- Awareness of cloud technologies and architecture.

- Experience influencing engineering best practices within your team.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
