Amazon is seeking multiple Systems Development Engineer(s) with the ability to develop/build software and/or services from the ground up and automate software development pipelines and workloads. A good candidate will have excellent Linux/Unix knowledge, including shell scripting, and a proficiency in at least one development language. They will be able to think at “Amazon scale” to solve problems in permanent, sustainable, and scalable ways. With an eye toward utilizing the best solution over the quickest solution.

AWS service teams rely on our tools to help ensure that the experiences of their customers are consistent across commercial and air-gapped AWS regions. The Systems Development Engineers on the team are responsible for designing, deploying automating and operating the systems where our software and services operate. This includes troubleshooting problems with systems and services, regular deployment of new versions of the systems and their subcomponents, deployment/system validation and testing, service monitoring, standing up new services/tools, etc.

The team(s) works with many different internal Software Development teams to drive improvement of the systems/services within the team's scope. It is important to be able to work collaboratively and independently to investigate and document issues and create solutions to solve them at scale.

This role will sit in our new headquarters in Northern Virginia, where Amazon will invest $2.5 billion dollars, occupy 4 million square feet of energy efficient office space, and create at least 25,000 new full-time jobs. These position(s) require that the candidate(s) selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance. The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate(s) obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph or commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

About the team

ADC2S Vertical

The ADC2S team is responsible for maintaining commercial parity in air-gapped regions by responding to operational needs and deploying feature requests, including big-ticket items such as region build handover. Engineers are expected to work with a high degree of autonomy, build strong relationships with the service team counterparts, and leverage their technical depth and problem – solving ability to resolve difficult and ambiguous issues.

AWS Cutlass Team

The Amazon Dedicated Cloud Engineering team is dedicated to building automated platforms and solutions to streamline the AWS build and deployment process in dedicated regions. Our vision is to fully automate and enable zero-touch AWS deployments thereby reducing the time it takes to deploy new features and freeing engineers to focus on building new services and capabilities.

Cutlass develops and operates service builders across Amazon use, improving their operational experience. We enable ticket notifications from airgapped regions and build platforms that put data in the right places for other tools to leverage, which all adds up to a reduction of toil and operational inconsistency from one region to another.

AWS Region Services (RS) Region Build

The AWS Region Build Team orchestrates the delivery of large, fast-paced software and hardware projects into AWS regions around the world to meet the growing demand for AWS services. Building these complex regions and the continuous service launch cycle requires exceptionally talented, focused, and driven people to align timelines with business needs, identify technical and resourcing risks, resolve multi-faceted conflicts, and to evolve best practices and operations. We are seeking an experienced manager to lead and drive a team of Technical Program Managers (TPMs) that will deliver AWS capabilities to our global customers.

Cross Domain Services (CDS) | Secure Connection Services (SCS)

Secure Connection Services' vision is to relentlessly reduce the data – to – decision timeline for our Public Sector customers by developing near – real – time secure connectivity, edge, and cryptographic capabilities enabling air, land, sea, and space missions. To achieve this vision, our strategy is to deliver a set of connectivity and edge capabilities to meet the diversified needs of our customers’ missions.

Messaging and Streams Team (MAST)

The Messaging and Streams Team (MAST) is responsible for operations and of the Messaging (SNS/SQS/AMQ) and Streaming (KDS/KDF/KDA/MSK) services in Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) and GovCloud regions.

Amazon Monitoring and Observability (AMO)

AMO Provides AWS CloudWatch services to our Isolated region customers for actionable visibility into the health of their applications and systems. Key features include web services for submission and retrieval of measurements, a console for presentation, and the ability to notify and automate based on results.

Simple Storage Solutions (S3G) – Unique Regions Engineering

We are focused on the day-to-day operations and long – term health of S3 within ADC partitions. This includes feature launches and feature parity with commercial, ultimately supporting all of S3's

pipelines. We evangelize automation solutions whenever possible, delivering on S3's goal to eliminate all repetitive manual operations.



Qualifications

- 7+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience

- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

- 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby

- Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Top Secret or above



Extended Qualifications

- 9+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience

- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
