Description

AWS customers trust us with their most sensitive data. We're building cryptographic systems that give customers verifiable, cryptographically-enforced control over access to their data and metadata. You'll lead the team building these systems from the ground up, redefine how AWS protects customer data across all services, then drive adoption across the entire company. Your team will design and implement solutions using Rust, PKI, formal verification, and distributed systems that make customer data inaccessible to operators by default while keeping operational costs near zero. You'll identify emerging security requirements, look around corners, and build proactive solutions that address problems before they occur. As an extension of the Piezo team, you'll drive security outcomes across AWS service teams by combining technical depth with the ability to influence teams with different visions.

Your work will have CISO-level visibility. You'll collaborate with VPs and senior leaders, drive adoption across service teams, and deliver deeply technical solutions that meet the security outcomes customers need. You'll help teams see security transformation not as a tax but as the foundation of customer trust. You'll solve problems others consider too daunting to attempt. We make the secure way the easy way for both our customers and our builders.

You're a technical leader who builds teams that deliver systems from first principles and find ways to retrofit these principles into existing infrastructure. You have expertise in distributed systems, large-scale design, cryptography, and security. You influence teams through technical credibility, empathy for operational concerns, and demonstrated results. You see problems others think are impossible and build solutions that work.

Key job responsibilities

Lead a team building cryptographic systems and security infrastructure that give customers verifiable control over their data access. Guide engineers designing and implementing solutions using Rust, formal verification, PKI, and distributed systems. Identify security gaps across AWS services and architect proactive solutions that scale to all Amazon builders. Drive security outcomes across AWS service teams. Collaborate with VPs and senior leaders to drive adoption of security controls. Make architectural decisions about building new systems versus modifying existing infrastructure. Influence teams through technical credibility while maintaining high security standards. Develop and mentor engineers to grow their technical and leadership capabilities.

A day in the life

Each day, hundreds of thousands of developers world wide build and operate services on AWS. They trust us with their most sensitive data. The AWS Proactive Security team builds the cryptographic systems and infrastructure that protect customer data at scale. You'll collaborate with engineering teams across AWS to deliver solutions that make customer data inaccessible to operators by default while keeping operational costs near zero. You'll dive deep into authentication systems, cryptography, PKI, system hardening, and large-scale security architecture. Your work will have CISO-level visibility and influence how services across AWS design and operate their security controls. You'll grow your team's capabilities through mentorship, technical guidance, and creating opportunities for engineers to take on increasingly complex challenges.
