Description

We are seeking a Senior Software Development Manager to lead a team focused on developing agentic solutions for conversational AI in Amazon Shopping. In this role, you will drive the creation of AI agents that not only enable large-scale reinforcement learning systems and robust evaluations, but also actively participate in customer conversations. Key job responsibilities

Technical Leadership:

Drive technical direction and architectural decisions for complex software systems, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, and maintainable

Establish engineering best practices, design patterns, and technical standards for the team

Make sound technical decisions based on empirical data and first principles

People Management:

Hire, develop, and retain top technical talent to build a diverse and high-performing engineering team

Provide mentorship, and career guidance to support the growth of team members

Foster a culture of ownership, innovation, and technical excellence within the team

Product Delivery:

Ensure on-time delivery of high-quality software through effective planning, risk management, and resource allocation

Balance technical debt remediation with feature development to maintain long-term system health

Drive operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, and continuous improvement of systems

Maintain a bias for action while ensuring high standards for reliability and customer experience

Cross-Functional Leadership:

Partner with product managers, scientists, UX designers, and business stakeholders to define and execute product strategy

Represent the team in cross-organizational forums and strategic planning sessions

Build relationships with key stakeholders across the organization to drive alignment and support

About the team

The charter of the Amazon Shopping Team is to improve shopping on Amazon using the conversational capabilities of large language models. We are working on an AI-first initiative to further improve the way we do search using large-scale foundation models. These foundation models are also used in downstream applications by various partner teams in Amazon Stores. Our goal is to build large language models (LLMs), which can empower conversational applications and facilitate online shopping.



Qualifications

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience

- 7+ years of engineering experience

- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

- Experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems

- Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms

- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, C++, Python, Go)

- Track record of delivering complex software projects on time and with high quality

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills



Extended Qualifications

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

- Knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture patterns

- Experience with microservice architectures, containerization, and orchestration technologies

- Background in machine learning, data engineering, or similar technically complex domains

- Track record of successful cross-team collaborations and influencing without authority

- Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment practices and tools

- Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow technical leaders

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
