Amazon Photos helps consumers preserve and re-live their memories. The service comes with unlimited photo storage for Prime members and apps are available on iOS, Android, Web, Desktop, Fire Tablet & Fire TV. The service is also integrated into Alexa devices such as Echo Show and Echo Spot. Amazon Photos is the latest digital offering to consumers released on the heels of the Amazon Music and Amazon Video offerings. We have bold goals to scale growth and adoption of the service around the world and delight our customers with a great product.We are seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead our AI/ML inference team, as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with computer vision and deep learning technologies for Amazon Photos.
Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Manager your responsibilities will include providing leadership and vision to the software team supporting Amazon Photos AI/ML technologies. You'll manage a backend team of engineers building tools and systems that power features across Amazon Photos client platforms including mobile, web, Echo Show and Fire TV. You'll ensure that the best engineering practices are followed and that our software is of the highest quality. You will expand your team, hiring talented team contributors at the right skill and leadership levels. You will work closely with other teams throughout Amazon to design and architect solutions that will scale to millions of customers.
A day in the life
You will lead the charge in scaling our advanced computer vision and deep learning capabilities to process media uploads at an enormous volume. You'll architect and design the ongoing evolution of our inference services, guiding and mentoring a talented team of engineers to deliver high-quality, high-performance results.
Your team is central to the Amazon Photos experience, powering the facial detection, clustering, semantic understanding, and moderation that helps customers relive their most precious memories. You'll work closely with the core service, science, and feature teams to drive a cohesive long-term vision for the AI technology underpinning the platform.
You'll partner with product to make critical decisions about which new AI/ML opportunities to pursue. Your leadership will be essential in scaling our inference capabilities to handle growing volumes while maintaining exceptional quality and reliability.
As an experienced manager within our established Seattle Photos team, you'll mentor engineers, champion best practices, and ensure your group continues delivering innovative solutions. High ownership, sound judgment, and a passion for building world-class AI systems are key to succeeding in this role.

Qualifications
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Extended Qualifications
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience working within Machine Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence domains

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
