Description
The Inbound Placement team is looking for an Research Scientist to help build next generation models for supply chain systems in the Supply Chain Optimization Technology (SCOT) group. We own the systems that decide where to place hundreds of millions of units of inventory a week, globally, shaping Amazon’s cost structures and value proposition to the customer and ultimately maximizing Amazon’s long term free cash flow. The work is complex and important to Amazon. There are no textbook solutions to the problems we are solving and very few attempts have been made to solve at Amazon's scale, which necessitates deep analytical thinking to solve problems.We are looking for an experienced Research Scientist with strong statistics skills and experience in OR and/or ML methods. As a Research Scientist, you will work with other Scientists, Software Engineers, Product Managers and business teams to understand the current challenges in our inventory systems, map these challenges to scientific models, innovate solutions using techniques in Operations Research, Machine Learning, Statistics, and Optimization and pick the right tools to deploy these solutions at scale. You will be part of shaping the future of inventory placement systems at Amazon. Your work will be visible to the business leaders in SCOT and will impact on how we serve our customers so that they get the right product at the right time.
Key job responsibilities
Use machine learning and analytical techniques to create scalable solutions for business problems.
Establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for large scale data analyses, model development, model validation and model implementation.
Research and implement novel machine learning and statistical approaches.
Influence senior leadership on the value propositions and generate new product ideas.
A day in the life
Analyze and extract relevant information from large amounts of data to help automate and optimize key processes.
Work closely with data & software engineering teams to build model implementations, and integrate successful models and algorithms in production systems at scale.
Contribute to Amazon's Intellectual Property through patents and/or external publications.
About the team
S&OP is responsible for assembling and solving the supply chain big picture for Amazon. We build systems to consume, optimize, and harmonize both forecasts and past actuals, for both storage space and units of inventory, at both the country-wide level and fulfillment center levels worldwide.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems and products experience- PhD, or Master's degree and 5+ years of quantitative field research experience
- Experience with big data technologies such as AWS, Hadoop, Spark, Pig, Hive etc.
- Experience communicating qualitative research methods and findings to non-qualitative researchers
Extended Qualifications
- Experience converting research studies into tangible real-world changes- Experience with discrete and continuous optimization methodologies and algorithms

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $143,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
