Description
Outbound Communications organization is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist. In Outbound, we are innovating and building scientific solutions to delight Amazon customers with timely, highly personalized and relevant messages across digital channels such as email, mobile and SMS that drive long-standing customer relationship with Amazon. As a senior research scientist, you will lead scientific innovations in measurement and experimentation science to answer fundamental questions such as which channels and strategies to invest to optimize long-term customer experience with Amazon. You will apply novel experimentation and attribution methods to capture incrementality of messages to drive engagement. You will own and present research artifacts to senior leadership and stakeholders that influence strategic decision-making.Key job responsibilities
As a senior research scientist in Outbound, you will answer ambiguous questions to drive strategic decisions through scientific innovations in measurement and experimentation science. The questions around finding message frequency and mix that drives optimal long-term engagement for customers, and understanding the true incrementality of each message to improve customer experience, will demand scientific research and rigor to solve. You will design experiments, perform causal studies, and use reinforcement learning to solve such problems. You will also lead setting up randomized control trials across different digital channels to understand their incrementality and cannibalization. You will make economic real world trade-offs to produce findings and results that lead to significant business benefits. You will present scientific findings to senior leaders and business, product stakeholders to guide for decisions that maximize benefits for Amazon in the long-run. You will mentor junior scientists in the team. You will closely partner with the software development engineering team to execute your design of experiments in production. You will coordinate with broader Amazon science teams to align your studies with the broader Amazon strategies and objectives. You will document and publish your research-driven artifacts to influence the scientific community in and outside of Amazon.
Qualifications
- PhD and 2+ years, or Master's degree and 4+ years of quantitative field research experience- 2+ years of experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems in the measurement science domain
- 2+ years of experience conducting causal studies through experiments, randomized control trials and other related methods
- 2+ years of experience with big data technologies such as AWS, Hadoop, Spark, Pig, Hive etc.
- 3+ years of experience communicating findings and details of quantitative research methods to non-quantitative audience
Extended Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience converting research studies into tangible real-world changes- 2+ years of experience with discrete and continuous optimization methodologies and algorithms
- 2+ years of experience working with bandits and reinforcement learning models

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $143,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
