In this role, you’ll join Amazon Leo's Power Systems Test team as a Sr. Test Engineer. This is a hardware engineering position focused on power system verification in our satellite mass-production facility. As a hands-on power/electrical lead in the integrated vehicle testing team, you will innovate and solve engineering issues that arise during the test of each satellite's integrated power system, specifically covering production, integration, testing, storage, handling, shipping of the Leo spacecraft. You will be supporting the vehicle integrated test operations line along side Design, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to improve operational efficiency, deploy new test procedures, and develop engineering dispositions related to non-conformances. This Test Engineer will require familiarity and expertise on design, manufacturing, test, validation, and qualification of modern power systems for autonomous vehicles (drones, satellites, EVs, etc.).

This position will work a typical M-F schedule, with rotating on-call weekend support. Although not routine, this role may require standing for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching. The role may require lifting up to 25lbs. unassisted.

Key job responsibilities

- Be the first point of contact between production, test, and design teams for operational support and triage of issues during integrated satellite power systems testing and manufacturing

- Work to implement new tests, processes, and tools to aid the testing, storage, and shipping of satellite power systems components and integrated systems

- Identify and implement opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and robustness of all test processes

- Develop standard repairs, rework procedures, propose design for manufacturing and test (DFM/DFT) improvements, improved processes and work instructions; and training for new operators and technicians

- Develop reporting tools on test KPIs, lead small integrated product teams between customers, stakeholders, and suppliers

- Work with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering experts to provide root cause failure analyses and implement corrective actions that reduce repeat non-conformances

A day in the life

The Sr. Test Engineer in this role is primarily responsible for ensuring that the satellite power system is tested comprehensively during satellite full rate production. You will be an expert on the hardware and software that test the satellite power system. You will audit existing tests, author/sign-off on new tests, and disposition non-conformances with root causes that may span across the system’s software and hardware stack-up. You will also own corrective actions, ensuring that mysteries get solved, test coverage gaps are closed, and repeat non-conformances are eliminated. This role also has a strategic responsibilities. Specifically, you will feed-forward lessons learned and influence the power systems test infrastructure, test systems, and processes for next generation satellites. About the team

The power systems test organization (working within the wider Electrical Engineering organization) is responsible for testing the Amazon Leo satellite integrated power system, which is composed of multiple sub-systems such as the solar array, battery, etc. The team builds complicated hardware and software systems that develop, prototype, test, and qualify satellite power systems. We are responsible for power systems testing cradle to grave—specifically, from early phase development efforts all the way through mass production and on-orbit operations.



Qualifications

- BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent

- 6+ years of demonstrated experience in a operations, design, or test role within the battery, energy storage, solar, consumer electronics, automotive, aviation, or space industry

- Experience in requirements definition, verification compliance for complex electrical systems

- Ability to dive deeply into electrical schematics to perform root cause analysis on unexpected power systems faults



Extended Qualifications

- Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent

- Experience with the project management of technical projects

- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to build and execute complex, comprehensive system-level test plans

- System test verification experience in the area of power conversion, power systems, solar, battery, electric vehicles, satellites, or rockets.

- Experience deploying solutions to solve complex and ambiguous problems in manufacturing, automation, and test

- Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar) to analyze test data, manufacturing metrics, interface with test equipment, and visualize results

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
