In this critical role, you will be responsible for owning and evolving the ontology that describes IMDb's data, ensuring it accurately represents the complex relationships and nuances of the rapidly evolving entertainment industry.
Key job responsibilities
Ontology Ownership and Evolution: You will take ownership of IMDb's existing ontology, which is currently modeled using a proprietary tool. Your expertise will be crucial in refining and expanding the ontology to accommodate intricate concepts such as movie versions, the variety of roles on TV shows, etc.
Data Modeling and Relationships: You will collaborate closely with Software Engineers and Product Managers to define and implement data relationships within the knowledge graph. Your deep understanding of ontology design principles will guide the team in building robust and scalable data models.
Stakeholder Collaboration: IMDb's data is consumed by numerous internal and external clients. You will work closely with these stakeholders to understand their data needs and ensure the knowledge graph effectively supports their requirements.
Future-Proofing: As the entertainment industry evolves, you will play a pivotal role in scaling the knowledge graph to accommodate new domains and emerging trends. Your insights will help IMDb stay ahead of the curve and adapt the data model to encompass diverse and emerging entertainment sectors.
Data Governance: While not directly owning data governance initiatives, you will contribute your expertise to inform and shape data governance policies and practices.

IMDb’s Entertainment Data & Discovery (ED&D) is responsible for the acquisition, accuracy, and availability of all IMDb data that drives IMDb experiences in addition to making that data available to hundreds of partners both inside and outside of Amazon. We are also the people, services, and process that protect and support professional and fan customers alike. Qualifications
* Proven experience as an Ontologist, with a strong background in knowledge representation, semantic modeling, and ontology engineering* Proven ability to define and lead ontology-related initiatives independently
* Ability to quickly adapt to and master new proprietary tools and technologies
* Expertise in industry-standard ontology languages and tools (e.g., OWL, RDF, SPARQL, Protégé) or proprietary equivalents
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for identifying and resolving data modeling challenges
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including software engineers and product managers
* Degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics or equivalent professional experience.
Extended Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics or other relevant fields* Experience building ontologies in semantic search
* Experience working with schema-level constructs (e.g. higher-order classes, punning, property inheritance)
* Familiarity with software engineering life cycle
* Familiarity with ontology manipulation programming libraries
* Exposure to data science and/or machine learning, including graph embeddings

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $92,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $206,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
