Estimated salary: $182,800

Description

AWS is building the infrastructure that powers the world's most critical workloads — and doing it at a scale that is reshaping electricity markets across the Americas. As a Grid Code Compliance Manager on the AWS Energy Infrastructure, you will own the Americas grid code compliance monitoring and serve as AWS's subject matter expert on grid integration policy across major ISOs and RTOs with the opportunity to influence data center designs.

This role develops strategies for data center capacity growth in coordination with utility infrastructure timelines. AWS operates mission-critical workloads including healthcare systems, emergency services, financial services, and essential business operations that require continuous, reliable power and cannot be interrupted. The focus is on bringing facilities online progressively as grid infrastructure becomes available and while grid codes are evolving, rather than waiting for full build-out completion.

You will translate fast-moving regulatory and market developments — from PJM's Expedited Interconnection Track (EIT) and behind-the-meter (BTM) generation reforms to ERCOT's Batch Zero process, emerging operating NERC standards for large loads and Auction (RBA) proposals — into interconnection strategies that protect AWS's ability to energize at scale, on schedule, and at competitive cost. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role at the intersection of power systems engineering, regulatory strategy, and hyperscale infrastructure planning.

Key job responsibilities

- Own grid code compliance monitoring across all AWS data center interconnection projects in the Americas, tracking changes to utility interconnection rules, ISO/RTO protocols, NERC standards, and state PUC rulemakings that affect large load interconnection across ISO/RTOs

- Serve as the internal SME on grid integration policy across major ISOs and RTOs, including expedited interconnection processes, behind-the-meter generation rules and associated regulatory filings, capacity market mechanics and auction design, reliability procurement proposals, and the implications of grid operator board directives on large load integration.

- Monitor and quantify the impact of proposed market rule and grid code changes on AWS's BESS, demand response, and large load portfolio economics.

- Coordinate technical compliance assessments for new and existing AWS load interconnections, including Voltage Ride-Through (VRT), Fault Ride-Through (FRT), Sub-Synchronous Oscillation (SSO), reactive power, and power quality requirements with internal stakeholder teams. Help perform studies in-house or work with consultants.

- Represent AWS in utility and regulatory forums, including PJM stakeholder committees (TEAC, MRC, MC, OC), ERCOT working groups (DWG, PRS, ROS, TAC), FERC proceedings, and state PUC dockets.

- Develop and maintain internal compliance and policy tracking frameworks, including regulatory change matrices, standard operating procedures, and escalation protocols for grid code violations or emerging market risks.

- Work with internal teams such as Energy Strategy, Legal, Finance, Engineering, and Construction teams to align technical feasibility with regulatory frameworks and operational requirements

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent

- 7+ years of experience in power systems engineering, utility interconnection, transmission planning, ISO/RTO market operations, or grid compliance roles.

- Demonstrated expertise in ISO interconnection processes, market rules, and stakeholder governance, including working knowledge of ISO's capacity market, interconnection queue management, and large load integration policy.

- Experience with grid codes and reliability standards, including NERC FAC, PRC, TPL and MOD standards.

- Experience leading or managing large load interconnection studies (LLIS, RTP, RPG, or equivalent) from application through energization.

- Experience with power flow and stability analysis tools (PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSCAD, or equivalent).

Extended Qualifications

- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Energy Policy.

- Professional Engineer (PE) license in one or more U.S. states.

- Deep familiarity with ISOs resource adequacy process and market policies — including stakeholder-driven proposals affecting data center and storage economics.

- Proven ability to interpret and apply complex regulatory, tariff, and market rule language to real-world engineering and business decisions.

- Experience engaging directly with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or regulatory bodies in a technical or policy capacity.
