Description

AWS Marketplace is transforming how enterprises discover, purchase, and deploy software solutions in the cloud. As a Principal Engineer in the AWS Marketplace Catalog organization, you will architect and build the systems that connect millions of customers with partner technology solutions across AWS Marketplace, the AWS website, service consoles, and AI-powered tools. Your work will directly impact how customers discover and engage with thousands of software products, driving billions in commerce.

The Catalog organization owns the core discovery and product information systems for AWS Marketplace, including the AWS RTB Fabric for real-time bidding and advertising solutions, and the newly acquired AWS Storefront service. You'll be working at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, AI-powered discovery, and commerce engine that serve customers ranging from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises.

We're looking for a pragmatic thinker who can balance deep technical expertise with broad architectural thinking. You'll translate complex business needs into elegant technical solutions while mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions across AWS Marketplace and beyond.

Key job responsibilities

Architectural Leadership: Design and architect large-scale distributed systems that power product discovery, catalog management, and real-time bidding infrastructure serving millions of customers. Define the long-term technical vision for how customers discover and engage with marketplace products across multiple surfaces including web, console, and AI agents.

Technical Vision and Strategy: Translate business objectives into technical roadmaps that span the Catalog organization, AWS RTB Fabric, and AWS Storefront service. Look around corners to anticipate future needs and prevent technical regret as we scale to support exponential growth in traffic, sellers, and AI-powered discovery experiences.

Cross-Organizational Influence: Partner with engineering leaders across AWS Marketplace, AWS Marketing, and AWS AI services to shape technical decisions that impact how millions of customers discover software. Your technical opinions will carry significant weight and influence architecture decisions across multiple organizations.

Mentorship and Development: Develop senior engineers into future Principal Engineers through design reviews, technical guidance, and career coaching. Raise the bar for engineering excellence across the Catalog organization by establishing best practices for system design, operational excellence, and technical decision-making.

Hands-On Technical Contribution: Balance high-level architecture with detailed technical work. Write architecture documents, review code, participate in on-call rotations, and dive deep into complex technical problems when needed. Lead by example in demonstrating technical excellence.

System Design and Review: Review Business Requirements Documents and system designs across the Catalog organization. Provide constructive feedback that improves designs while developing the technical judgment of senior engineers. Ensure designs align with long-term architectural vision and AWS best practices.

Strategic Technical Advising: Counsel leadership on technical tradeoffs, build vs. buy decisions, and technology investments. Help leadership understand the technical implications of business decisions and advocate for technical investments that enable long-term success.

A day in the life

Your day starts with reviewing architecture documents for upcoming initiatives in AI-powered product discovery and the AWS Storefront integration. You provide detailed feedback that helps senior engineers think through scalability challenges and operational considerations they hadn't considered.

Mid-morning, you meet with Product Managers and engineering leaders to discuss the technical approach for expanding AWS RTB Fabric to support new advertising formats. You sketch out a high-level architecture on the whiteboard, identifying key technical risks and proposing solutions that leverage existing AWS services while maintaining the flexibility to evolve.

After lunch, you join a design review for a new catalog indexing system. You ask probing questions that help the team identify edge cases and potential failure modes. Your feedback helps the team arrive at a more robust design that will scale as the marketplace grows.

In the afternoon, you spend time mentoring a senior engineer who's working toward a Principal Engineer promotion. You review their recent design work and provide coaching on how to think more strategically about long-term architecture and cross-organizational impact.

You end the day writing an architecture document proposing a unified approach to product discovery across marketplace, console, and AI agent surfaces. This document will influence technical decisions across multiple AWS organizations and shape how customers discover software for years to come.

About the team

The AWS Marketplace Catalog organization is the engine that powers product discovery and engagement for AWS Marketplace. We connect over hundreds of thousands of customers with thousands of software solutions from AWS Partners, generating billions in commerce annually. Our systems serve millions of unique visitors each month across the AWS Marketplace website, AWS console integrations, and AI-powered discovery tools.

Our team owns three critical services: the core Catalog platform that manages product information and discovery experiences, the AWS RTB Fabric that powers real-time bidding and advertising solutions, and the AWS Storefront service acquired in 2025 that's expanding our commerce capabilities. We're at an exciting inflection point as we transform from a traditional web marketplace into an AI-native commerce platform.

We value technical excellence, customer obsession, and bias for action. Our engineers are empowered to make decisions, experiment with new technologies, and drive meaningful impact. We believe in work-life harmony and support flexible working arrangements that help our team members do their best work.
