Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Kuiper Productivity Engineering is seeking an experienced Senior Database Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of our SAP HANA database environments. This role requires deep technical expertise in SAP HANA architecture and will involve collaborating across Infrastructure and Applications teams to improve performance and efficiency. You will ensure the architecture is reliable, highly available, and observable.

This is an on-site role that requires employees to work from the company's office 5 days per week. Remote work is not an option for this position.

Key job responsibilities

- Lead the architecture and design of SAP HANA database solutions across multiple environments; work with Infrastructure teams on HA, clustering, and/or multi-region deployments

- Develop and implement database migration strategies and performance optimization initiatives

- Establish best practices for database administration, backup/recovery, and high availability

- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across teams

- Drive automation initiatives for database operations and maintenance tasks

- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on complex technical solutions

- Lead capacity planning and resource optimization efforts

- Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures

- Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical issues (as needed)

A day in the life

In this role, you will own implementation across major deliverables for SAP Infrastructure. You will work with customers and stakeholders to define requirements and collaborate with engineers to translate those into solutions. This role requires working closely with Kuiper's Enterprise Applications team as both partner and "first and best customer" to continuously improve the SAP service.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field

- 5+ years of database administration experience

- 5+ years of hands-on experience with SAP HANA

- Expert knowledge of SAP HANA architecture, including memory management, table partitioning, system replication, backup and recovery procedures

- Strong experience with performance tuning and optimization

- Proven experience with high-availability solutions

- Experience with shell scripting and automation tools

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills



Extended Qualifications

- SAP HANA certification

- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

- Knowledge of additional database platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.)

- Experience with monitoring tools (SAP Solution Manager, HANA Cockpit)

- Experience with CI/CD pipelines

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $131,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $227,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
