Description

Amazon's Worldwide Grocery & Development, Physical Retail division is seeking a Construction Manager focused on base building improvements across our national grocery and retail portfolio. This role is responsible for the assessment, planning, and execution of building infrastructure projects including structural, envelope, roofing, site/civil, MEP systems, vertical transportation and life safety upgrades. You will serve as the on-site owner during construction, leveraging deep building-level knowledge to ensure quality execution and protect Amazon's real estate investment.

The ideal candidate has a General Contractor or Construction Management background with hands-on field experience managing complex building renovation and infrastructure work. You understand how buildings are constructed, how systems interact, and how to identify and resolve deficiencies before they become failures.

Key job responsibilities

On-Site Construction Management:

- Serve as Amazon's on-site representative during active projects, providing direct oversight of general contractors, subcontractors, and building consultants.

- Conduct pre-construction site assessments to evaluate existing conditions, identify deficiencies, and inform scope development.

- Manage day-to-day field operations including schedule enforcement, quality inspections, safety compliance, and issue resolution.

- Lead OAC meetings, document progress, and maintain clear communication with internal stakeholders and external partners.

- Travel 50–75% with extended on-site presence during active construction.

Base Building & Infrastructure Delivery:

- Manage projects across building envelope (roofing, waterproofing, façade), structural systems, site/civil, parking, and core MEP infrastructure.

- Coordinate landlord improvement work, building code compliance upgrades, and capital reinvestment projects.

- Oversee scope development from assessment through closeout — including consultant coordination, bid levelling, permitting, and commissioning.

- Drive value engineering with a GC mindset identifying constructability issues, sequencing conflicts, and cost-saving alternatives.

Building Systems Knowledge:

- Apply deep understanding of building construction methods, materials, and system interdependencies to inform project decisions.

- Evaluate contractor means and methods for appropriateness given existing building conditions.

- Identify latent defects, deferred maintenance, and systemic issues during site walks and translate findings into actionable project scopes.

- Support capital planning by providing field-based condition data on critical building infrastructure.

Program & Stakeholder Management:

- Manage a portfolio of 50–100+ concurrent projects in various stages across a geographically distributed national portfolio.

- Partner with Facilities, Critical Infrastructure, Real Estate, and Store Operations to align project priorities with business needs.

- Track and report project budgets, schedules, and risk — escalating issues with data-backed recommendations.

- Ensure contractor compliance with OSHA requirements, Amazon safety standards, and local building codes.

About the team

Our team manages the built environment across Amazon's physical retail portfolio. We are looking for someone with deep construction knowledge who thrives on job sites — not behind a desk. You should be comfortable making field decisions, reading drawings, challenging contractors, and owning outcomes.

This role requires independent judgment, a bias for action, have the ability to operate across multiple geographies with minimal oversight and a sense of humor. Our goal is to be Earth's most customer-centric company — and we are just getting started.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field

- Experience operating within at least two disciplines within the construction industry, such as Contracting, Owners Representation, Architecture, Design and Engineering, Commercial Development, analysis and control of construction costs or similar

- Direct field supervision experience managing subcontractors and multi-trade renovation work.

- Working knowledge of building envelope, structural, MEP, and life safety systems.

- Experience managing project budgets, schedules, and contract documentation (AIA).

Extended Qualifications

- General Contractor license or prior employment with a commercial GC.

- Experience with base building, landlord work, or capital improvement programs in retail, grocery, or multi-site environments.

- Knowledge of building codes (IBC), fire/life safety systems, and ADA compliance.

- Experience managing roofing, waterproofing, structural repair, or parking/site work.

- OSHA 30-Hour certification.
