OverviewWe’re at the forefront of keeping Windows devices secure, intelligent, and up to date in the era of AI‑powered experiences and Copilot+ PCs—combining deep customer insight, data‑driven decisions, and modern update infrastructure to deliver trust at global scale.With continued advances in AI capabilities and the emergence of new device experiences, the Windows Update platform team is expanding to support these opportunities. We are hiring a Principal Product Manager to develop critical capabilities to support AI innovation and to strengthen the update infrastructure that keeps Windows devices secure, compliant, and up to date. This customer‑obsessed role requires a deep understanding of customer needs, business priorities, and technical systems to drive strategic initiatives. You will also play a key role in evolving the Windows Update platform to ensure reliability, security, and trust across the Windows ecosystem.

Responsibilities
As a Principal Product Manager, you will lead the product strategy and execution across the responsibilities outlined below:
Influence and align cross-functional teams, external partners, and senior leadership based on customer and business needs to build shared product vision, strategy, and roadmaps across multiple feature areas. Provide thought leadership, address executive‑level questions, and secure leadership approval for strategic direction, priorities, and investment decisions.Advocate for priorities, resources, and tradeoffs required to achieve desired business and customer outcomes. Partner across divisions to unify shared priorities, resolve conflicts, and drive alignment at scale.Leverage data, customer insights, and business signals to evaluate long‑term investment opportunities and tradeoffs. Guide prioritization decisions across multiple feature areas to ensure roadmaps align with success criteria, Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), and strategic goals.Define and influence long‑term product and service vision across feature areas that span organizational boundaries. Ground strategy in deep understanding of customer needs, market and user research, competitive landscape, and Microsoft’s business objectives. Translate vision into integrated, multi‑year roadmaps informed by product architecture and system design.Communicate product strategy and vision effectively to internal and external stakeholders, building consensus through executive reviews, partner collaboration, and industry or conference engagement as appropriate.Partner closely with engineering teams to ensure successful feature delivery, applying deep technical understanding to guide architectural decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, and unblock execution.Embody our Culture and Values
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in product/service/program management or software developmentOR equivalent experience.Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Preferred qualification:
Proven experience solving complex, deeply technical problems that require navigating ambiguity, making difficult tradeoffs, and balancing customers, partners, business, and platform constraints.Proven track record of defining and delivering product strategy and multi‑phase product roadmaps, from concept through execution, in highly technical product environments.Experience working across complex, low‑level layers of operating systems or platform technologies, with the ability to reason architectural constraints, dependencies, and system‑level tradeoffs.Demonstrated commitment to customer and partner success, with a proactive, self‑motivated approach to identifying and resolving customer pain points, while partnering effectively across engineering.Compelling customer and partner engagement experience, including working directly with customers and partners on transformation initiatives; ability to capture complex requirements and translate them into product plans, user journeys, and end‑to‑end scenarios across multiple personas and use cases.Effective communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical and business concepts to diverse audiences and influence outcomes without direct authority.Outstanding problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills, with demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity and resolve complex technical, product, and business challenges through sound judgment and structured decision‑making.

Product Management IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
