Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission.SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

To achieve this goal, we are looking for a Thermal Engineering Manager to develop customer-focused solutions and striving for engineering excellence in thermal design and analysis. The Thermal Engineering Manager will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of future high density, liquid-cooled systems in Azure datacenters by developing and leading a global team of thermal engineers.
Lead a team of thermal engineers to design and develop systems and building blocks for Azure datacentersBring clarity, create energy, and drive results in a way that inspires engineers to perform at their best and grow their careerProvide technical guidance, development, and mentorship in mechanical design, validation, and technical leadershipRecruit, hire, and grow talent to build a high performing team Develop scalable work flows with focus on continuous improvement, quality, cost, and predictabilityEnsure high standards of engineering excellence in design and development balanced with the need for agility and time to marketBuild relationships with key partners inside and outside Microsoft to source components, lead design strategy, ensure robust performance prediction, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to regulatory, quality, and safety standards.Ability to understand the ODM working relationship and drive the thermal engineering team to successfully collaborate with ODM’s to deliver products that meet specification.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems, provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.Drive strategy for thermal technology and design strategy with keen focus on sustainable materials with respect to their mechanical properties and re-use of common parts across generations.Stay abreast of the latest trends, advancements, and best practices in thermal engineering, cloud infrastructure, and data center technologies, and propose innovative ideas to enhance our hardware offerings.Embody our Culture and Values
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:10+ years of technical engineering experience; particularly with Heat Transfer and FluidsOR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experienceOR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experienceOR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.8 + years experience in industry performing a thermal engineering function2+ experience leading a team of engineers, coordinating complex projects, and driving innovation in a collaborative environmentUnderstanding of thermal/mechanical design principles and predictive analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes, and use of CAD and CFD softwareOther Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Industry experience in server hardware development, data center infrastructure, or cloud computingExperience in systems level thermal design including thermal simulationExperience in cross-discipline design process from chip to the rack levelExperience managing ODM engineering deliverablesKnowledge of material science, design for manufacturing, and sustainable designExperience with prototyping, tooling design, and high volume manufacturing
Hardware Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
