Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. Responsibilities
Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team, fostering an inclusive culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.Drive technical strategy and execution, setting clear goals, roadmaps, and delivery milestones for the Agentic Platform.Guide architectural direction across distributed systems and services to ensure scalability, resilience, reliability, and performance at internet scale.Partner with cross-functional leaders in AI research, infrastructure, and product teams to transform breakthroughs into production-ready capabilities.Oversee engineering best practices including operational excellence, observability, system reliability, and continuous improvement.Define and optimize compute workflows, data access patterns, and storage architecture to meet strict SLA and performance requirements.Mentor and coach engineers and technical leads, supporting career growth and strategic team development.Champion modern engineering practices and new technologies, staying informed on industry trends and opportunities to elevate platform capability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience.Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years of engineering experienceOR equivalent hands-on experience.4+ years of people management experience, leading and developing high-performing engineering teams.Extensive experience architecting and scaling large-scale distributed systems with solid knowledge of distributed design patterns, system reliability, and performance optimization.Hands-on expertise building and operating services on Microsoft Azure or other major cloud platforms.Deep experience with Kubernetes, container orchestration, microservices, and cloud-native runtime environments.Solid understanding of SQL and distributed data storage systems, including performance tuning and high-availability strategies.Proven ability to define technical roadmaps, make strategic architectural decisions, and deliver complex systems at scale.Excellent cross-org collaboration skills and ability to influence across research, infrastructure, and product teams.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
