Overview

Microsoft Search and M365 Copilot are redefining how people find information, reason, and get work done using AI. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and evolve AI-powered Search and Copilot experiences that are used by millions of customers every day across Windows and Microsoft 365.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, AI-assisted experiences, and end-to-end product engineering. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, product managers and designers to deliver reliable, high-performance features that power Microsoft Search and M365 Copilot experiences across multiple surfaces.

This role is ideal for engineers who see AI as a force multiplier in their daily development workflow and enjoy working on evolving problems at the intersection of user experience and data‑driven iteration.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

Drive user acquisition and engagement outcomes for Microsoft Search and M365 Copilot experiences by identifying opportunities, forming hypotheses, and iterating quickly based on real usage signals and customer feedback.Deliver end-to-end features across the stack: build and evolve user experiences (web UI) and the backend services/APIs that power them, ensuring performance, reliability, and maintainability.Run A/B experiments and analyze results to make data‑driven decisions; partner with stakeholders to define and evaluate success metrics for engagement, retention, and experience quality.Proactively seek and apply new AI trends and AI‑assisted software development practices to improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of our products, while maintaining high standards for correctness, security, and code quality.Use telemetry and live-site insights to identify regressions and opportunities, then prioritize and execute improvements with a strong sense of engineering craftsmanship.Design, implement, and optimize components and services with a focus on scalability, latency, and robustness; contribute clean, well-tested, and well-documented code.Mentor and raise the bar through thoughtful design and code reviews, sharing best practices and improving engineering standards.Collaborate across functions (PM, Design, Privacy/Legal as needed) and across teams to evolve shared patterns and platforms that enable consistent, high-quality experiences.You won’t be expected to be an expert in every area on day one, but you should be comfortable learning and contributing across the stack.

Qualifications

Required Qualifcations:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience. Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.Experience improving engineering systems or workflows (e.g., tooling, testing, release processes, operational readiness).Track record of identifying systemic issues (performance, quality, velocity) and driving durable improvements.Experience or strong interest in AI‑assisted development workflows (e.g., using AI tools to prototype, reason about code, generate tests, or accelerate iteration), with a disciplined approach to review and validation.Passion for continuous learning and applying learning in ways that drive business improvements.Experience designing, developing, and maintaining highly scalable web services.Solid understanding of system design, data structures, algorithms, and performance trade‑offs. Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
