Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and operate the DocumentDB control plane—the systems that provision, scale, secure, and recover customer clusters at cloud scale. You’ll own backend services and workflows that power cluster lifecycle operations (create/update/scale/repair), automation, and reliability, working closely with partner infrastructure teams and on-call to keep production healthy.

Responsibilities
Design and ship control plane APIs and orchestration for cluster lifecycle (provisioning, scaling, upgrades, delete)Build resilient workflows: idempotency, retries, state machines, and safe rolloutsImprove reliability/observability: SLOs, dashboards, alerts, and incident response toolingDrive operational excellence: runbooks, automation, and performance/cost improvementsStrong backend engineering skills and production ownership mindsetExperience with distributed systems, cloud services, and operational debuggingComfortable working across teams on dependencies and release coordinationEmbody our culture and values
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience. Job Requirements: Other & Additional

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Preferred/Additional Qualifications
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
