Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for a passionate Senior Software Engineer to help achieve that mission.

The Azure Hardware Infrastructure and Server Hardware Diagnostics team has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer focused on building software for datacenter servicing operations across public and Sovereign clouds. You’ll be expected to lead discussions and own software products used every day by datacenter technicians and automated systems management across all Microsoft datacenters. You will lead by example to produce extensible, maintainable, well-tested, secure, and performant code that adheres to design specifications. Enhance deployment frameworks to maximize efficiency. Drives efforts to integrate logging and instrumentation for gathering observability data on system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety mechanisms, and for allowing monitoring and investigating security-related concerns and scenarios for products, services, and offerings.

Responsibilities

Development owner for critical datacenter diagnostics tools and services

Integrate feedback systems (voice of customer, observability, AI/ML) to improve feature sets and customer experience

Streamline diagnostics workflows and introduce automation to enhance operational efficiency

Lead initiatives that modernize diagnostics practices and scale them across global infrastructure

Work to root cause software issues, identify and implement fixes to reduce manual operational efforts

Knowledgeable with Windows and Linux Operating Systems configuring and installation and networking

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.    

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of computer architectures including processors, interfaces, and memory.    Experience working with multiple teams on root cause analysis, troubleshooting, and debugging skills resolving hardware/firmware/operating system/ software issues.   

Familiar with server hardware troubleshooting and repair, PXE, Redfish, PowerShell, Azure Active Directory, Linux, SSH, and scripting

Experience with technical hardware problem solving and server systems architecture.

Experience with hyperscale infrastructure or cloud hardware platforms.

Familiarity with BMC/IPMI, UEFI/BIOS, RedFish, MCTP, PXE, and other protocols.

Track record of leading cross-functional transformation initiatives

Experience with implementation of hardware/firmware security primitives

Experience with working from early concept of server platform architecture, design to shipping final product and infleet operations

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
