The Hyper-V Virtual Switch is a foundational networking component that powers Azure and Azure Stack HCI. It must evolve to meet the increasing demands of modern data centers and customer scenarios through its software.

You will be responsible for design, architecture, and execution in your areas of responsibility, producing and operating high-quality scalable services, and collaboration with partners. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who takes pride in their craft, works pragmatically and with enthusiasm to motivate and energize others. Core responsibilities include: • Develop a deep understanding of the virtual switch technology that ships with Windows and Windows Server.

• Develop a deep understanding of the Windows Server and Azure Network architectures, particularly as related to how they use the virtual switch.

• Influence architecture requirements and portability of software across varied platforms and implement functionality using the latest software development life cycle techniques and tools.

• Ship quality code whether it is in kernel or in user mode and ensure it has diagnosability and observability built into it for production level usage.

• Demonstrate deep empathy for the customer and support them from day 0.

• Foster and participate in an inclusive and collaborative team culture.

• Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify requirements, trends and opportunities.

• Participate and influence a culture with a focus on making customers successful and improving developer productivity.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Java, Javascript or PythonOr equivalent experience.2+ years of experience in Computer networking experience with fundamentals of packets/frames/protocolsOther Requirments:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Perferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Equivalent ExperienceDemonstrated understanding of systems software and experience in systems programming developing APIs and servicesExperience with architectural skills backed up by implementation Demonstrated coding, debugging, testing, and problem-solving skillsA track record of solid results across multiple ship cycleExperience with networking protocols and architectureThorough understanding of modern computer architectures found in desktop PCs and servers, including networkingExperience with development of and/or use of open-source softwareExperience with multi-threaded software developmentValued experience with:Network protocol analyzers and packet wire format bit-level structuresNetwork driver frameworks and driver models for networkingPatching to upstream community-maintained software sourcesExperience as a “maintainer” of sources, reviewing code edits from other community contributors and providing feedback and guidancePortable coding experience against CLang/MSVC/GCC compilersFamiliarity with Linux and Windows Operating Systems internalsSoftware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
