Overview

The Xbox Design team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to bring a strong blend of design systems thinking, engineering craftsmanship, and collaborative problem-solving to the Xbox Design System team. This team builds and evolves the foundational components, patterns, and infrastructure that enable product teams to create exceptional gaming experiences across the Xbox ecosystem. The work emphasizes precision, scalability, and expressive power—ensuring our design language is faithfully realized in code and scales seamlessly across platforms and device contexts. This role helps unify visual and interaction foundations through robust, production-grade implementation, supporting the diverse needs of games and experiences that feel consistently crafted, contemporary, and distinctly Xbox.

You understand the power of great interface design—and the responsibility of translating that intent into high-quality, maintainable code. You are a starter and a finisher: someone who can partner deeply with designers and engineers, shape component architecture and tooling, and deliver pixel-perfect, accessible UI foundations that teams can trust. Working alongside designers, researchers, and engineers, you will help turn design vision into durable systems—creating the shared technical DNA that connects players to their next favorite game.

Responsibilities

Implement and evolve the Xbox Design System — Build and maintain high-quality, production-ready UI components and foundations with a strong focus on visual fidelity, accessibility, performance, and cross-platform consistency. Partner deeply with designers — Work day-to-day with designers to translate design intent into code, providing technical feedback that improves feasibility, quality, and consistency of designs. Contribute to component architecture and tooling — Help shape component patterns, APIs, and supporting infrastructure that scale across teams and enable reliable adoption. Champion developer experience — Create clear documentation, examples, and workflows that make the design system easy and efficient for engineers to use correctly. Uphold quality and standards — Apply best practices for testing, accessibility, maintainability, AI process, and versioning, contributing to a long-lived, trustworthy system.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.Additional or preferred qualifications Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.8+ years of professional software development experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience delivering production-quality software (e.g., Master’s + 6+ years), with significant contributions to UI/component systems and architecture.Demonstrated mastery of modern frontend and full-stack technologies (e.g., React/TypeScript, Tailwind, build systems). Experience building or evolving shared component libraries or design systems at scale, including infrastructure for documentation, testing, and cross-team adoption.

Ability to utilize AI in production coding workflows.

Proven success collaborating with cross-functional partners, especially designers and product stakeholders, to deliver high-impact, user-focused experiences.

Strong fundamentals in computer science (data structures, algorithms, design patterns).

Strong ownership of quality attributes such as accessibility, performance, maintainability, and consistency in UI implementation.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
