Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

Azure Cosmos DB is Microsoft’s next-generation, globally distributed, multi-model cloud database service, built to power planet-scale applications. It enables developers to elastically scale throughput and storage across any number of regions, with tunable consistency models. Cosmos DB delivers ultra-low latency and high-performance reads and writes, all backed by enterprise-grade SLAs (Service Level Agreements).

We are looking for a Software Engineer II to help build and operate highly reliable, large-scale distributed systems that power critical, user-facing experiences. The role involves designing and evolving backend services, improving system performance and resilience, and working closely with senior engineers to solve complex problems at scale. Our systems operate under extreme load, serving well over 1 trillion queries per day, so experience with high-throughput, low-latency platforms is a strong plus. You’ll collaborate in a fast-paced environment where engineering quality, ownership, and impact matter.

Responsibilities

Own the design and implementation of new query engine features.Analyze and optimize processing stages to improve performance and efficiency.Monitor the health of the query service to ensure reliability and high availability.Investigate user-reported issues, deliver high-quality fixes, and highlight opportunities for long-term improvements.Collaborate with partner teams and leadership to manage upstream and downstream dependencies.Embody our culture and values

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.Job Requirements: Other & Additional

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Preferred/Additional Qualifications

Experience with Backend and Distributed Systems.Hands-on experience with query engines and query processing.Foundation in data structures and algorithms, with direct application to query processing.Proven experience across the full-service lifecycle, including development, deployment, and ongoing operations.2+ years of experience designing, developing reliable engineering systems, and/or infrastructure.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
