Description

The Product teams in the Developer Division are focused on delivering core AI productivity features for developers building and maintaining apps across desktop, mobile, cloud, and web platforms. We take pride in creating tools and experiences that are widely adopted and highly effective. Our tools support a broad range of developers—including those in the community, education, open-source, and enterprise spaces.

The era of AI is transforming developer tools. The Data and Artificial Intelligence (Data+AI) team in Microsoft’s Developer Division is shaping the future of AI for developers. We collaborate with GitHub to bring AI assistance to every stage of coding—writing, debugging, diagnosing, testing, committing, and reviewing. Our team is a diverse, multidisciplinary group of data scientists, researchers, and software engineers passionate about using AI to enhance developer productivity. Fine-tuned AI models and intuitive user experiences are key to satisfaction, efficiency, and adoption. We’re building on foundational Copilot work with agentic systems to deliver end-to-end developer experiences, both locally and in the Azure cloud. Our work ships in GitHub, Visual Studio, VS Code, and beyond.

This position is for a Software Engineer II excited to work on developer scenarios and passionate about the opportunities AI models create and the strategies that turn them into products. The role calls for creativity, persistence, and critical thinking to work with emerging technologies. You’ll collaborate with teams across IDEs, programming languages, data science, and internal and external LLM providers across geographies and time zones.

The role focuses on two key areas: building tools and systems to measure and evaluate advanced AI productivity features at scale, and supporting forward-looking exploration through rapid prototyping and delivery of cutting-edge developer tools.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.Experience with at least one modern programming language such as TypeScript, Python, C#, JavaExperience with AI LLM models, such as OpenAI, Azure AI, ML. Experience working with or delivering AI-assisted developer tools.Experience running a 24/7 Azure based servicesOther Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.Experience with object-oriented design and programming, Test Driven Development approaches, distributed cloud architecturesExperience displaying interpersonal skills necessary to articulate design choices and the importance of our security deliverablesExperience working with experimentation systems, telemetry systems and data to drive engineering and product decision makingCustomer focus and a deep commitment to delivering products that create customer value and delightful experiencesExperience with AI LLM models, such as OpenAI, Azure AI, ML.Experience running 24/7 cloud servicesExperience with object-oriented design and programming, Test Driven Development approaches, distributed cloud architecturesExperience delivering AI-assisted developer tools or relevant experience driving AI-assisted products to ship quality.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
