Call for Post Doc Researchers in Computational Environmental Sustainability at Microsoft Research (MSR)

Microsoft Research Redmond is actively seeking a qualified postdoctoral researcher to join us in advancing the state-of-the-art in computational environmental sustainability. The ideal applicant will possess awareness of environmental sustainability issues and be proficient in using computational and Machine Learning (ML)/Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to solve problems and drive impact in this space. Example research areas include, but are not limited to: high-performance simulation, optimization (including geospatial), ML, AI, and Generative AI, applied to molecular, materials, physical, or process design, environmental issues, permitting or deployment, related to electricity, construction, or carbon removal.

We collaborate extensively with other groups at Microsoft, including other groups at Microsoft Research Redmond, other Microsoft Research Labs, Microsoft’s Environmental Sustainability Science and Innovation team, and Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation team. As a Post Doc Researcher at MSR, you will collaborate with other researchers on a shared research agenda, driving forward an effective program of research.  We highly value collaboration and building new ideas with members of the group and others, and focus on impact.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

PhD (or completed by June/2025) degree in a mathematical, scientific, engineering or computational fieldor equivalent experienceDemonstrated research using advanced computational methods in environmental sustainability or related fields.   Computer programming skills demonstrated by the authorship and/or publication of source code and the completion of programming courses at the undergraduate or graduate level or equivalent.  Research ability demonstrated by journal and conference publications or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications : 

Demonstrable ability to define an ambitious, original research agenda in collaboration with others.  Research agenda in ML/AI and/or environmental sustainability. Ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.  Passion about real-world applications and impact.  Effective communication skills. 

Research Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
