Description

Microsoft Packaging Engineering is a critical function within our Packaging and Content organization (PAC). We are responsible for delivering packaging success across all Microsoft business lines which include Surface Devices & Accessories, Xbox, and Mixed Reality.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to take up a key role in the development and execution of product packaging across all of Microsoft’s product lines from the expansive world of gaming with Xbox, to the premium and cutting-edge technology of Surface, anchored by a strategy of creating the most sustainable and accessible packaging on the planet.

You will be part of a team of packaging engineers delivering packaging solutions and processes which realize the Microsoft product vision and our mission of empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The team is responsible for setting and delivering packaging performance, quality, reliability, and cost goals for all hardware development programs. We partner with internal and external teams all over the world to achieve these goals.

The Packaging Engineer will work in the development of unique customized packaging solutions. In this role, you’ll support the Packaging Development Engineering team, which is part of a larger global team including Packaging Design, Packaging Program Management & Content and Packaging Manufacturing Readiness.

Design, develop, modify, and evaluate electronic parts, components, integrated circuitry, or systems related to computer technologiesDesign, develop, and deliver packaging solutions and process to realize our client’s product vision

Set and delivery quality packaging performance, reliability, sustainability, and cost goals for packaging lineup through collaboration with cross-functional teamsCollaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver quality packaging on budget and on time and help improve sustainability.Influence packaging design concepts and provide engineering solutions to realize design intent by working with internal packaging engineers, designers, and external suppliersWork with internal packaging engineers and designers and external suppliers to create and maintain packaging designsResponsible for end-to-end product packaging program management and for driving all packaging developments and engineering processes; including but not limited to: performing engineer prototyping to establish technical feasibility for the design, creating plans for component qualifications, and reviewing logistics/supply chain optimizationPerform engineering prototyping to establish technical feasibility for the design by creating plans for components qualification and reviewing logistics and supply chain optimizationEvaluate performance testing, including simulation modeling and design failure mode analysisInterface with external suppliers, designers, and distribution centers to Monitor testing standards used, release management, marketing, and logisticsInterface with external suppliers/designers or distribution centers and internal teams such as release management, marketing and logisticsSupport and analyze product packaging process and improvements in order to assess damage, determine root cause, and implement packaging corrective actions to eliminate issues (e.g., specification tools and templates, metrics, configuration management tools, supplier requirements around specifications)Support and/or drive packaging process analysis and improvements (e.g., specification tools and templates, metrics, configuration management tools, supplier requirements around specifications.)Create and maintain component specifications, assembly instructions, and pallet assembly instructions.Perform project reviews and report performance-based specifications that details critical criteria to enable all consumer, component manufacture, assembly, logistical and legal requirements.OtherEmbody our Culture and Values

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

5+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of technical engineering experience OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

3+ years demonstrated/applied experience with: Product Packaging materials, their properties and conversion processes (e.g., rigid box, corrugated, paperboard, labels, and fabricated/expanded foam)Packaging dielines, product development and configuration management processesApplication of technical packaging principles, theories and concepts (e.g. sustainability, modeling/simulation, performance testing, etc.)

Additional Qualifications:

Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under U.S. export control regulations, potentially under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations.  As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may verify status using other documents, where applicable.

Preferred qualifications

8+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of technical engineering experience OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

Proficiency with software to create and maintain packaging specifications - specifically ArtiosCAD and/or AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Office (Excel & PowerPoint), and TOPS/CAPEExperience using SolidWorks is a plus.Working knowledge of packaging lab equipment (e.g., cutting table, drop tester, vibration table) is a plusAnalytical and problem-solving skills

Hardware Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
