Overview

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team is responsible for the full lifecycle of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, spanning site selection, development, and operations. Our global footprint includes more than 400 datacenters in 34 countries, supported by over 165,000 miles of fiber optic cable. These facilities form the backbone of Microsoft Azure and are central to our commitment to reliable, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure.

As part of the CO+I Energy Team, you will join a team of professionals responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and delivering strategic energy projects. The candidate will manage a portfolio of activities to identify and execute energy opportunities to advance Microsoft’s datacenter growth, in line with strategies to leverage sustainability, time to market and economic value in order to solidify Microsoft’s leadership in providing infrastructure for the global AI economy.

As a Senior Energy Markets Manager, you will manage a portfolio of activities to optimize and execute opportunities in datacenter energy supply and technology, including: manage regional PMs, support site selection efforts and datacenter interconnection strategy and execution in partnership with utilities, develop business cases for new technology applications, communicate project needs and manage relationships across internal and external stakeholders, negotiate energy rate tariffs/special contracts, identify regulatory and policy opportunities for Microsoft, and identify market conditions material to our business.

The Senior Energy Markets Manager will need the ability to develop creative solutions that combine knowledge of regulated and deregulated power markets to deliver power to Microsoft datacenters. In addition, you should be capable of developing commercial applications for advanced energy technologies. You will need to understand the dynamics of energy markets and Microsoft’s own unique position in the energy sector. This necessitates that you bring an innovative, collaborative presence to the role towards driving commercial & technology execution to realize business goals, lower costs, and meet sustainability targets.

Responsibilities

Lead and assist regional PMs on regulatory engagements with utilities, regulators, and related stakeholders important to datacenter infrastructure deliver, cost/range management and sustainability goals.Oversee Regional PMs on datacenter interconnection and energy supply contract development with utilities and third-party energy suppliers in support of Microsoft’s datacenter businesses in the Americas.Lead or assist Regional PMs in the analysis of energy industry trends, market policy and regulations to proactively identify opportunities to reduce cost, minimize risk, and advance sustainability goals. Partner with globally distributed internal stakeholders on site selection and energy project development, e.g. distributed energy, renewables. Work collaboratively with external vendors and consultants on regional market research. Develop internal business cases including providing input on financial models and market research. Build relationships with external suppliers and partners, particularly electric utilities, local and regional regulatory agencies, customers, and energy technology providers. Work with third parties to develop and monitor analytics tools for portfolio analysis.Business travel required (10%-25%, subject to fluctuation with business tempo).

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related rolesOR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 4+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related rolesOR equivalent experience.

Background Check Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or preferred qualifications

Doctorate in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related rolesOR Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 6+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related rolesOR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 8+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related rolesOR equivalent experience.1+ year(s) of people management experience.Professional understanding of the power industry, with specific focus on the mechanics of power markets. Ability to understand and review utility tariffs, power contracts, and power market fundamentals.Understanding and experience working with regulatory structures in the energy and utility industry.

Sourcing Engineering M4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
