OverviewMicrosoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. This position is a Subject Matter Professional providing key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Candidate will be responsible for the technical review, analysis and coordinating the delivery of complex Datacenter electrical systems, associated controls, and overall topology.

The position is for a Subject Matter Professional who provides crucial input to other organizations and stakeholders. The candidate must be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in data center electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Responsibilities include managing, reviewing, and coordinating the delivery of complex data center electrical systems, power distribution systems, and backup power systems. The candidate will ensure consultants adhere to Microsoft standards and perform technical reviews and analysis of leased and colocation data centers from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.
Design and Design Oversight:
The successful candidate will review Electrical design infrastructure for Lease DC project buildouts, special projects, and retrofit upgrades, addressing any issues during construction. They will assess existing facilities to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards. The role involves collaborating with partners, leading design work groups, and conducting cross-functional meetings for multiple projects.
Collaborate with the Global Electrical Team to understand and develop the data center (DC) electrical designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) for new DC project build-outs.
Lead & guide and oversee consultants in designing and coordinating electrical systems with other disciplines, as well as managing associated power requirements and overall electrical topology for our data center projects.Leads electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms and key stakeholders within Microsoft.Oversee all power system designs throughout the design phases, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and on-site installation. Address and resolve issues raised by construction teams and stakeholders.Collaborate extensively with the procurement team, manufacturers, as well as global and local engineering teams to provide the necessary electrical solutions for each project.Accountable for developing specifications and drawings, detailing the sequence of operations for electrical systems, as well as creating comprehensive drawings and specifications for our electrical topology.Assist the Operations team in troubleshooting electrical failures and collaborate with operations personnel and equipment vendors to resolve issues.The subject matter Professional will also work on retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities.Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.Be highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure.Structured thinking and logic with very roficient analytical skills.Proficient customer service focus, with the ability to communicate with highly technical management teams.Creative approach to problem solving and ability to think out of the box.Remote site support for construction teams.Provide guidance to staff augmentation teams (which includes A/Es and A/E Consultants).
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.Minimum 3 years’ experience as a lead engineer with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex electrical engineering systems (Data Centers, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries)Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards.Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches.Detailed understanding of relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching.Advanced knowledge of building codes and regulations.Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits.Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data center environments.Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages.Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.Experience with using Bluebeam Revu and associated products.Subject area knowledge with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.
Electrical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
