Overview

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers Microsoft's cloud services. As Director, Systems Engineering in the CTO Office of CO+I, you will be responsible for developing new innovative products and solutions for Microsoft's data center infrastructure including electrical distribution and power management solutions, mechanical cooling and infrastructure systems, and integration of these through control systems that communicate with production software infrastructure. You will work closely with other engineers, engineering managers, product managers, and customers to design, prototype, test, and deliver high-quality and reliable solutions that meet the performance, efficiency, and scalability requirements of Microsoft's cloud services.

Responsibilities

Design:

Work with stakeholders to create a multi-year strategy for a data center focused product line that involves intellectual property and influences the development and negotiation of custom contracts to reflect this strategy. Influences industry to adopt intellectual property and/or licensing models for new product development.Oversees and advises engineers (directly or indirectly) on external supplier or partner engagement in a broad set of engineering disciplines. Focuses on long term strategy, and influences approvals to ensure alignment across teams and the organization.Oversees the execution of data center architecture solutions for product lines or multiple products across teams that account for a broad set of engineering disciplines that enable future concepts that impact the broader CO+I organization. Ensures customer/partner value is derived for the hardware engineering deliverables of the team's product line.Drives team's understanding of the existing industry outlay/standards to inform product development and program outcomes.Collaborates with multiple internal engineering teams and external vendors in the development of technical drawings, specifications, and requirements to help drive consistency across internal development teams. Provides unique insight on the development of innovative, underdeveloped, data center products and features.Serves as an expert resource in reading and reviewing device specifications, industry standards, and organizational goals to deliver results to the Microsoft data center fleet. Ensures that defined modifications add value to existing products and are in alignment with future Microsoft data center product offerings and shares this information broadly with Microsoft data center development teams.People Management:

Leads strategic review processes for the product development group to identify business, experience, and technical risks (design reviews, phase gates, readiness reviews, etc/). Influences project deliverable decisions across the CO+I innovation division by identifying appropriate cross-organizational compromises.Coordinates with and influences suppliers to ensure they have the capability and capacity to align with strategic roadmap.Ensures that design strategies resolve process gaps, resources gaps, and create process improvement that account for competitive threats, quality, performance, cost, schedule, risk, and capability that aligns across the organization.Serves as an advisor for multiple engineering teams within the department for evaluating the application of materials, properties, and techniques used in production.Reporting and Documentation:

Reviews, edits, and monitors progress in the development of both standard and customized reports prepared. Helps set documentation requirements across teams within their discipline or function to ensure consistency of technical and program deliverables.Defines documentation and reporting strategy. Delivers reporting on documentation, strategy at scale. What this team works on is as important as how it works on it, delivery tooling and consistency of deliverables is critical to success for this team.Advises and coordinates the administration of training across different teams within the engineering and testing/verification professions.Drives the development of various automated testing solutions across multiple teams within their department. Seeks out opportunities for automation across other teams.Champions innovative principles in the development of prototypes of complex hardware systems and products for use in validation of new products or product features. Defines standards and priorities for the development of prototypes across a product group or line.Oversees the creation of external testing suppliers or partner engagement models across multiple teams, ensures supplier and partner readiness is appropriately evaluated and that knowledge is documented for use across all Microsoft data center product lines.Influences engineering teams to help create innovations in test methodology that are applied to a new or existing product line. Collaborates across teams to drive towards a common solution for the business.Oversees and facilitates coordination of cross-function groups to support the development of dashboards or reports for testing and quality metrics. Champions new metric and reporting innovations. Optimizes the execution of metrics targets.Drives strategy execution for the development of test infrastructure and/or architecture for a product.Oversees teams of engineers and sets standards for the types of test equipment required for measuring features of new product technology. Recommends and/or may approve the purchase of new test equipment. Drives long term test strategy across team and organization to accomplish testing goals.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 11+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience. Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations.  As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide either proof of their country of citizenship or proof of their U.S. permanent residency or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C.1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 15+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.5+ years of people management experience.Demonstrated subject matter expertise in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering with knowledge to be capable of leading other engineering areas outside of subject matter expertise.

Hardware Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
