Description
OverviewThe Core Platform Driver team is seeking a Senior Development Engineer passionate about working on a state-of-the-art gaming platform. Our team operates at the intersection of hardware and software, collaborating with hardware engineers to advance graphics and provide industry-leading game development technology.
In Core OS, we are responsible for building and optimizing operating systems across Azure, Microsoft Linux OS, Windows Client, Xbox, and Windows Server platforms, supporting cloud services for billions of customers worldwide. In this era of ubiquitous computing, systems software excellence has never been more important. Delivering high-quality, efficient systems software is critical to Microsoft’s success, ensuring reliability, reducing costs, and enabling innovative features that delight customers.
In this role, you will contribute to building and optimizing platform components, driving improvements in system performance, reliability, and efficiency. Hands-on experience with power management across Windows, Linux, and/or iOS platforms is essential. Expertise in graphics stacks, including engine runtime, drivers, microcode, and hardware, combined with experience with performance analysis and tooling, will help deliver next-generation gaming experiences.

Responsibilities
Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine requirements.Leads by example within the team by producing extensible, maintainable, and testable code. Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). Applies appropriate coding patterns and best practices.Leads discussions for the architecture and creates proposals for architecture by testing design hypotheses and helping to refine code plans. Provides feedback, proposed solutions, to peers. Owns architecting of solutions, with minimal technical oversight. Assures system architecture meets security and compliance requirements and expectations.Independently creates a clear and articulated plan for testing and assuring quality of solutions. Drives efforts to add new tests, remove antiquated tests, and aggregate tests to improve the test suite.Applies debugging and performance tooling and examines logs, telemetry, and other methods to verify assumptions through writing and developing code proactively before issues occur and reactively as issues occur for products. Conducts retrospective debugging of solutions to identify root causes of problems.Maintains communication with key partners across the Microsoft ecosystem of engineers. Acts as a key contact for leadership to ensure alignment with partners' expectations.Embodies our culture and values.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience. 4+ years of experience with Windows Graphics driver software stack.4 + years of experience owning and delivering key components of a software product.2+ years of experience with system-level performance optimization..

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
