Description

Are you looking for an exciting role as part of a global team of physicists, engineers and software developers defining the new field of Quantum Computing? 

Microsoft is researching the future of Quantum Computing, including theory, hardware, and software. As a part of this effort the Quantum Mechanical Engineering team is developing cryogenic refrigerator architecture to enable the advancement of Quantum Computing. We are on the cusp of an accelerated effort in quantum computing and this position is an opportunity to get in at the start of this new intense phase.  We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Cryogenic Mechanical Engineer to lead and support the installation, integration, commissioning, and operation of various cryogenic systems, particularly within quantum computing applications. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional troubleshooting abilities, a solid understanding of vacuum technology, and practical experience in process instrumentation and control systems. This role demands both strong field execution and system-level design leadership.

Maintenance, installation, commissioning, upgrading and operation of several helium cryoplants and related infrastructure. Provide expert-level troubleshooting of cryogenic systems, including instrumentation faults, vacuum failures, and control logic anomalies. Lead the commissioning of cryoplants and cryostats, including system calibration, leak checking, and vacuum pumping procedures. Execute and organize preventive, planned and reactive maintenance strategies for cryoplants and support equipment. Maintain high-performance vacuum systems, identify and repair leaks Ensure performance and reliability of Cryogenic Equipment.Other:

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications:

Master's Degree in Mechanical EngineeringOR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND 2+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment OR equivalent experience.1+ (year/s) of hands-on systems experience with cryogenic refrigerator development.Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. Must be willing and able to travel (domestic and international) to support program activities (25-50%). Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer 2-4 years of relevant experience in the following areas:  Hands-on systems experience and expertise in design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and operating of 4K and mK cryogenic refrigerators. 3D CAD experience, Creo and/or SolidWorks. Designing for manufacturability, and installing, of ultr-high vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment. Engineering project management and best practices. Troubleshooting complex cryogenic and process systems, including instrumentation, vacuum integrity, and control issues. Analytical techniques including root cause analysis, basic structural, thermal, stress, and machine design. Familiar with: Liquefier design, maintenance, and operation. Dilution refrigerator design, maintenance, and operation. COMSOL/Ansys Helium leak Checking and debug. Residual Gas Analyzers. Vacuum pump cart with molecular turbo. Transfer dewars. General machine shop tools (Mil, Lathe, Hand tools...etc).

Quantum Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
