The Microsoft Turing team hiring a Principal Applied Scientist to join our innovative research and engineering team working on state-of-the-art deep learning models to power end user experiences across the company. Applied scientists and software engineers in the Turing team work together to push the boundaries of large-scale deep learning models on Turing’s world class distributed training infrastructure. The team is pioneering search and the core copilot experiences across Microsoft’s ecosystem.

In addition to ensuring that Microsoft is pushing the state-of-the-art large-scale models, the Turing team also works on improving experiences across Microsoft’s products and services by working on high value scenarios. The Turing team has shipped capabilities across all of many Microsoft scenarios including M365 Copilots, Bing Chat, search for enterprise and knowledge management (aka Cortex) , quick reply on Outlook, Smart Compose features in Word, image enhancement models, image search models, as well as many other features across Office,Bing, and Xbox.

As part of the team, you would be driving projects through their entire life-cycle from idea creation through implementation, experimentation and finally shipping to our users. We are looking for strong, motivated, results-oriented principal applied scientist to help drive the design and implementation of the next wave of improvements of products for M365 Copilot and Microsoft. You would be working with truly big data by training and extending the capability of deep learning models to provide compelling experiences across our products. Projects can span across modeling, data engineering, model optimization, large scale experimentation, and shipment of cutting edge technology for millions of users. Due to the wide range of project opportunities, projects are assigned based on candidate's interest and background. Also, the project assignments are fairly permeable. So, one can move around and play different roles depending on your interest.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Preferred Qualifications:

8+ years of industrial experience coding in C++, C#, C, Java or Python. 8+ years experience in applying deep learning techniques and drive end-to-end AI product development (Search, Recommendation, NLP, Document Understanding, etc).Familiarity with common machine learning, deep learning frameworks like Pytorch/Tensorflow.Ability to communicate technical details clearly across organizational boundaries. Strong ability and effectiveness working end-to-end in a challenging technical problem domain (plan, design, execution, continuous release, and service operation)

Experience with shipping internet scale, low latency and high throughput systems AI products

Self-driven, results oriented, high integrity, ability to work collaboratively, solve problems with groups, find win/win solutions and celebrate successes

Customer/End-result/Metrics driven in design and development.

Keen ability and motivation to learn, enter new domains, and manage through ambiguity Solid publication track records at top conferences like ACL, EMNLP, SIGKDD, AAAI, WSDM, COLING, WWW, NIPS, ICASSP, etc.Applied Sciences IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
