Overview

Join the forefront of data center innovation with Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) Cloud Applied Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) group as an Applied Scientist II. In this pivotal role, you’ll help drive sustainability and efficiency across Microsoft’s core infrastructure that powers services like Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure.

As an Applied Scientist II, you will leverage machine learning, big data, predictive analytics, and time series analysis to transform data center efficiency. With over 400 data centers in 32 countries and millions of servers, our infrastructure offers a unique opportunity to make a global impact. You’ll collaborate with cross-discipline teams to push the boundaries of data center sustainability and efficiency. Responsibilities

Apply advanced techniques in data science, machine learning, and AI to improve data center sustainability and efficiency.Translate complex datasets into actionable insights and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.Design and execute experiments to validate hypotheses and evaluate new approaches, ensuring rigor and reproducibility.Provide strategic input on business opportunities and product enhancements based on data-driven insights.Collaborate with engineering teams to deploy and optimize models at scale.Contribute to product strategy, aligning scientific solutions with business objectives to deliver measurable impact.Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to drive initiatives that achieve tangible business outcomes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year of data science experienceOR Master’s degree in related field AND 3+ years of data science experienceOR Bachelor’s degree in related field AND 5+ years of data science experienceOR equivalent experience.

While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in related field AND 3+ years of data science experienceOR Master’s degree AND 5+ yearsOR Bachelor’s degree AND 7+ yearsOR equivalent experience.Experience with large-scale telemetry systems, data collection, processing, and analytics.Expertise in Exploratory Data Analysis, Inference, Predictive Modeling (Regression, Classification), Time Series Analysis, and Machine Learning (SVMs, Gradient Boosted Trees, Neural Networks, CNNs).Strong foundation in applied statistics and mathematics with ability to apply advanced analytical techniques to solve complex problems.4+ years of experience applying statistical techniques (e.g., experimentation, statistical modeling).2+ years of customer-facing, project-delivery experience.Proficiency with Spark and Python.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
