The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity, through our IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Program, for Tool & Die/Deep Draw Apprenticeship in Auburn, Washington.

This comprehensive 5-year training program consists of 10,000 hours of paid on-the-job training and essential classroom education, designed to equip you with the skills needed to excel. The program begins with a 20% probationary period, allowing you to acclimate to the role while gaining valuable hands-on experience. You will attend school for at least 144 unpaid hours per school year (four hours each week), registered through a local Community and Technical College. Your wages as an apprentice will be defined in Article 17 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the International Association of Machinists District 751 and The Boeing Company, with progression to a higher wage step for every 1,000 hours of recorded on-the-job training until completion. Upon graduation, you will be placed in the target job at the maximum rate and receive a journey-worker certificate and card recognized worldwide.

As a Tool & Die/Deep Draw Apprentice, you will learn: To interpret blueprints, work orders, and technical documentation to define fabrication and repair requirements; develop effective plans for tool fabrication, maintenance, and repair, including material selection and process sequencing; troubleshoot production challenges and implement corrective actions to restore functionality and optimize performance; operate and maintain advanced machine tools and equipment safely and efficiently; inspect and verify that tools and components meet stringent quality standards and regulatory requirements; collaborate with cross-functional teams including production, engineering, and quality to support continuous improvement initiatives; communicate with customers and suppliers to resolve functional issues and coordinate repairs or replacements; and follow established safety protocols while contributing to a culture of safety and operational excellence.

Applicant Eligibility: Applicants must not have previously enrolled in or completed an IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship program.

Assessment and Course Completion: For English and/or math assessments, your assessment score and the corresponding course placement results (course number and title).

Proficiency in math and English must be verified through one of the following:

Completing Intermediate Algebra or a higher-level math course within the last 5 years.

Completion of an English 90 course or assessment with a grade of C or better.

Qualification for Blueprint Reading and Precision Measuring Tools: You can meet the qualifications through one of the following methods, which will be verified via your resume, work history, and transcripts:

Vocational Courses:

Basic Blueprint Reading or equivalent

Basic Precision Measuring Tools or equivalent

Milling Machine (a course minimum of 80 hours, or 5 or more credits)

Lathe (a course minimum of 80 hours, or 5 or more credits)

Relevant Work Experience: A minimum of one year of work experience in a similar field, such as:

Boring Mills (Vertical, Horizontal)

Computer Numerical Control

Drills (Radial, Press, NC)

Grinding (Internal, External, Surface, Thread

Heat Treat

Jig Bore, Jig Grinder

Lathes (Conventional, NC, CNC, Turret)

Layout (Conventional, CMM)

Mills (Conventional, NC, CNC, Profile)

Tool Grind

Trade Related Bench Work

Position Responsibilities:

Perform all functions related to tool fabrication, rework, and repair as required.

Obtain work orders from the team leader or supervisor, determining assignments based on schedule dates and tool availability.

Read work orders and blueprints to identify required tasks, tools, and equipment.

Develop plans for the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of tools.

Initiate and coordinate engineering change requests with internal support groups when necessary.

Determine the sequence of tool fabrication work, troubleshoot issues, and develop solutions to production challenges.

Access and utilize appropriate tool drawings, models, and specifications using available computing systems.

Select and verify necessary equipment from the shop storage area, ensuring current tool certification.

Perform repairs or replacements on tools as per Standing Tool Order (STO) Production Requests, and request rework orders if necessary.

Layout holes, lines, and other tool features, and install or modify hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum tubes as required.

Operate various machinery, including power saws, drill presses, and CNC machines, to shape materials and prepare details.

Move materials and equipment using Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) and overhead cranes as needed.

Maintain accurate records of orders and coordinate tooling information with other shifts and departments.

Handle hazardous materials in compliance with Boeing procedures, using appropriate personal protective equipment.

Engage in continuous improvement practices to enhance quality, safety, and efficiency in tool and die work.

Use precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers and gauges, to ensure accuracy in fabrication and repairs.

Interface with customers and suppliers to incorporate changes or resolve functional and installation issues.

Submit completed jobs to Quality Assurance and assist inspectors in performing necessary checks or measurements.

Utilize mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry, to calculate dimensions and analyze Model Based Definition (MBD) for fabrication details.

Conduct tool tryouts and make necessary adjustments to ensure production meets quality requirements and specifications.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience doing jobs or tasks where you had to apply math skills such as algebra, geometry and/or trigonometry.

Experience reading engineering blueprints/drawings.

Experience working with precision measuring tools.

Experience operating mill and/or lathe machines.

Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
