Microsoft Research has been studying quantum computing for several years and has become the world's center of expertise on topological quantum computing. The research effort includes a staff of theoretical physicists and experimental teams around the world. The Redmond team is building the control systems for quantum computing that is based on a classical computer architecture. The overall system is being developed by a multi-disciplinary team including software, hardware, mechanical, and materials engineers. These systems require a new set of tools, designs, and test equipment. You will be part of a team solving complex and challenging problems that enable our design teams. In addition to engineering challenges, as discoveries are made our tools and techniques must adapt. Attention to detail, edge cases, and testing are a must to accommodate a shifting landscape. Responsibilities Follow and help improve lab safety processes and procedures Safe handling of cryogenic material Construction and maintenance of lab instrumentation and equipment Debugging equipment issues Develop procurement and build plan for materials and tools Assist design and test teams with projects and operations as needed Domestic travel may be required for training
Required Skills Familiarity with usage and maintenance of RF test equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, BERT, etc. Understanding of electrical circuits Familiarity with shop tools (drill press, hand tools, soldering iron) PCB soldering, assembly, and test (0603 minimum) Use mechanical and electrical drawings to build cable assemblies and lab equipment Experienced with coordinating third-party vendors Use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, SharePoint) Able to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs. Experience 3+ years working in an electronics lab environment
