DESCRIPTION Amazon’s Tax Services calculate and invoice sales taxes for every Amazon business, including AWS, digital goods, physical stores, retail, and third-party sales. We are responsible for correctly calculating tax according to the unique laws of more than 10,000 tax jurisdictions in the US alone and more than 100 countries worldwide. These taxes vary by the kind of customer buying a product, their intended use of the product, the date on which they’re buying, and more than 100 attributes of the product itself. An attribute as subtle and specific as the SPF level in a skin cream can determine whether it is taxed as cosmetics or sun screen, and this definition itself varies by jurisdiction and even between the individual tax regulators determining whether Amazon has calculated the right taxes for a sale. Amazon has to be able to automate these subtle, complex, human judgments to calculate sales tax on more than 1 billion potential transactions per day, on a catalog of more than 7
