Microsoft is seeking exceptional data scientists to join the Office of the CVP, Chief Economist, (Microsoft Economics). Candidates should have strong technical data skills and a desire to use those skills on applied economic problems.

The data scientist will work closely with economists and other data scientists in the group. Example topics include cloud pricing (spot, reserve, workloads, datacenter), sales promotion effectiveness, search auctions, machine learning predictions and forecasting, and market design. The work involves theoretical models but focuses on applied statistics like causal inference and a wide variety of both supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Hires with experience in ML will be expected to have an interest in learning econometrics and causal inference techniques. Some data engineering experience
- BS in one or more of: Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Economics (with econometrics focus) - 3+ years professional experience in applications of advanced statistical and analytical techniques - Passion for solving practical problems and innovative thinking - Proficiency in statistical packages and standard libraries in R (glmnet, ggplot, etc.), Python (numpy, pandas, etc.) or MATLAB - Proficiency with Relational Databases and SQL - Proficiency with distributed Big Data Analytics using one of: Apache Spark, Hadoop, Azure Data Lake or COSMOS - Solid understanding
