Bing is a search engine that delivers content selected from the Web by algorithms optimized for best results. Algorithms cannot include or exclude content unfairly because of how they feel or what they believe. Nevertheless the decisions they make, and any editorial decisions that complement them, produce content selections that include some things and exclude others, often based on data signals or design assumptions which themselves could include biases. Users might easily find bias where none was intended. This position is about identifying search results that could be perceived as biased and doing something about them. This involves analysis, documentation, and especially communication: with colleagues responsible for improving search results, with other Bing teams whose features are involved, and with upper management, whose support may be needed for change.
