Smartphone Process Development and Manufacturing

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer within the Microsoft Device Group (MDG), you will be responsible for implementing device manufacturing strategy to drive the supply base towards Best in Class Manufacturing practices. This individual will provide Manufacturing Engineering technical guidance and Project Engineering Management leadership to Microsoft's Global consumer electronic manufacturing/repair operations. Priority will be to support the development and manufacturing start-up of new product, new contract manufacturing facilities and new assembly processes. Other responsibilities include driving continuous process improvement and operational excellence initiatives. This position's core focus is managing large scale projects, leading a cross functional team at the assigned suppliers. The candidate should also be a strong team player who motivates peers and team, drive root causes analysis to derive actionable data and implement corrective actions timely (by identifying clear problem ownership and take leadership to drive issues to closure with various functional teams and supplier), communicates status with peers, management and other stakeholders; quickly resolves issues that impede progress of projects or programs. It is critical to have an established history of leading and influencing change of a technical team.

Core Job Responsibilities:-

o Lead new manufacturing projects in support of Microsoft end-to-end (e2e) product development and introduction process.
o Implement Manufacturing Strategy by leading a team of technical resources at manufacturing sites and/or CMs
o Develop manufacturing processes and techniques in support of new product introduction
o Support new factory bring up and process implementation
o Achieve end to end Process Yield and Efficiency targets established for process phases
o Identify project capital and non-capital equipment needed for projects; ensure its successful implementation
o Statement of Work management (may be responsible for contract compliance management with suppliers)
o Manufacturing Processes & Tools Development & Implementation in support of Operational Excellence
o Standardize manufacturing process across major sites
o Ensure proper process documentations at manufacturing site(s)
o Drive continuous process improvement initiatives and best practices
o Approve and assists with implementation of procedures, process changes and/or ECNs
o Frequent travels to manufacturing sites is required

Qualifications:-

o Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated work experience in manufacturing engineering, process engineering, product design, including high volume smartphone development and manufacturing
o BS degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial/Electronics/Electrical Engineering or related field and/or equivalent hands-on experience is required
o Ability to define problems and associated root causes, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical data and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Hands-on competent DOE experience is a big plus
o Demonstrated ability to manage large projects/programs
o Strong working knowledge of domestic and/or international business practices.
o Strong demonstrated ability to write, speak and present information effectively and persuasively across communication settings
o Demonstrated experience in re-engineering efforts and statistical analysis (Lean & Six Sigma experience)
o Self-sufficient PC skills: Excel, Word, Power Point, Visio, MS project, etc.

The Microsoft Manufacturing & Supply Chain (MSC) Product Engineering (PE) team is looking for a Senior Product Engineer. The PE team is responsible for supporting the launch and production of Microsoft's innovative consumer electronic products; including Surface, Microsoft Band and Surface Accessories in volume manufacturing.

This team is the go to group for complex product failure characterization, root cause analysis, yield improvement, test plan creation and driving product improvements. This includes understanding factory failures, customer returns as well as reliability failures. The PE team partners with the development, manufacturing, test engineering and quality teams to improve the cost of manufacture as well as the overall quality of the product. This is a senior level position that will require the candidate to be recognized as the product expert in manufacturing, test, failure analysis and data analysis as well as collaborate with members across the Manufacturing, Product Development, System Architecture, Quality, Reliability and Supply Chain organizations to deliver innovative and valued results that will ensure our hardware products continue to delight our customers and meet volume manufacturing cost and quality goals.

The successful candidate understands the architectural, design implementation and test concepts of computer systems, has a thorough understanding of system design verification requirements and ensures that they are met before the product is released to manufacturing. The candidate must be skilled in a wide range of activities from designing experiments, performing root cause analysis to managing multiple technical activities at outsourced global contract manufacturers.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in:
o Cameras (RGB and IR) and optics.
o Touch video display design and manufacturing.
o Component fabrication processes (CNC, injection molding, metal forming).
o Manufacturing test flows, plans and negative path testing to ensure product quality.
o Debugging failure modes and performing root cause analysis of consumer electronic products.
o Bench evaluation and bring-up of consumer products.
o Mentoring a team of mechanical engineers in the interaction of architecture, design, test and manufacturing.
o Demonstrating understanding of the problem and solutions through the analysis, review and debug of new and existing systems.
o Independently performing characterization, data analysis, providing conclusions and generating actionable reports.
o Both common and more complex test equipment and methodologies in use.
o Developing system level diagnostics from system verification environments and deploying tools and debug guides for high volume manufacturing environments.
o Understands entire product development and manufacturing processes related to high volume consumer electronics.

Qualifications:
o BS in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (MS preferred).
o A solid understanding of core mechanical engineering principles (mechanical, materials and analysis are required.
o Eight to ten years of experience of designing (CAD), implementing, or validating hardware products of medium to hiplexity.
o Understands entire product development and manufacturing processes related to high volume consumer electronics.
o Familiarity with PC, embedded system architectures hardware and software is a significant plus.
o Strong communication skills and must be able to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms.
o This position will be located in Redmond, Washington; however, some overseas travel will be required.
