Senior Human Factors Engineer

The ideal candidate is a career human factors practitioner with extensive experience in the design of consumer electronics devices

Summary of the position:
This role has the responsibility for human factors issues (i.e. psychological, psychophysical and physiological) in the design of consumer hardware devices within Microsoft. This position requires a person with a deep understanding of the complex interactions between humans and machines and the ability to inform and drive the delivery of simple design solutions. This individual will work closely with hardware engineering, program management and business teams to introduce and implement best practices for maximizing the comfort, ergonomics and use of consumer devices.

Responsibilities:
Function as the Human Factors SME within hardware product teams
Establish best practices in hardware design to maximize user experience and comfort
Serve as user advocate across the hardware development process
Be a valuable and reliable member of the human factors team

Duties:
Conduct primary and secondary research to inform hardware product design
Communicate research findings and recommendations to key stakeholders
Represent to the hardware teams the functioning of the human system
Work cross-group within hardware teams to integrate the functioning of the human system into hardware architecture and design

Skills and Competencies:
Extensive experience working in consumer hardware product design, and bringing products to market
Expert level understanding of human machine interactions within the context of consumer electronics
Demonstrated ability to advance innovative research methods to explicate complex hardware interaction experiences with broad user populations
Demonstrated product innovation in consumer electronics technology
Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability for cross-team, multidisciplinary collaboration

Required qualifications:
A minimum of an MA/MS in Human Factors, Ergonomics, or a related field
Experience designing and conducting original experimental research on physical devices
Strong statistical analysis skills; familiarity with parametric and non-parametric statistics and the various statistical packages used for analysis (SPSS, Statistica, etc.)
Ability to present research data simply and clearly
2+ years of relevant industry experience conducting user research and effectively driving tangible outcomes with product teams
Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team with limited supervision
Strong oral and written communication skills

Desired qualifications:
Experience with advanced methods for exploring consumer perceptions around physical comfort and use with the goal of establishing relationships between these perceptions and product attributes
Consumer product experience
