Role & Opportunity:
The Microsoft Surface Team is seeking qualified candidates for Hardware Engineer positions in the Design Verification team. You will be responsible for the design verification, characterization, tuning and qualification of Surface hardware. You will develop comprehensive verification and characterization strategies and plans that bridge high-level use cases to product architecture/design to effectively and systematically reveal and screen out defects. The Design Verification Engineer provides critical analysis of data and drives the right solutions, design changes, optimizations and trade-offs in the context of business priorities. On a frequent basis, you will create and introduce innovative test techniques and methods to ensure robust product qualification. You will also lead test strategy discussions, develop test methodologies and plans, execute test procedures, and project-manage qualification cycles.
The position involves working closely with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, software engineers, software verification engineers, manufacturing test engineers and program managers.

Qualifications:
BS/MS in Electrical Engineering with more than five years of experience designing and testing high-volume consumer electronics at component and system levels
Demonstrated ability to design comprehensive verification strategies with supporting documentation including test plans, procedures, and reports
Strong communication skills required, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms.
Must be able to plan work, and work to a plan adapting as necessary in a rapidly evolving environment.
The ability to comprehend and assimilate technical concepts across multiple disciplines is a plus.
Enthusiastic, motivated and self-driven.
Domestic and international travel may be required.

Role & Opportunity:

Responsibilities include using RF engineering know-how to investigate and debug performance issues, devise & verify fixes and improvements and participation in cross-functional engineering discussions. Combinations of products and accessories will also be studied. Investigating ways to improve product execution. Generating status and wireless performance reports will be required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate passion for RF development environment and a good understanding of multiple wireless technologies.

Qualifications:
- 7-10+ years of RF experience
- Experience with circuit level design (RF PCB layout, matching, circuit characterization) and debug
- Experience with conducted and radiated testing (OTA) of wireless devices
- Experience with disassembling and modifying complex wireless hardware for experimental purposes
- Understanding of radio receiver designs and potential desense mechanisms
- Proficiency with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers
- Experience with EMI\EMC\ spurious testing for FCC compliance
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or similar field

Power Subsystem EE for Batteries and Power Supplies:
Develop smart battery packs and power supplies to support Surface and related accessories
Act as interface from power sub-system team to device teams
Define and maintain specifications for battery and power supply
o Ensure that specs have been reviewed by suppliers and by system team
o Be able to justify key requirements
Drive design reviews and issue closure with suppliers covering topics such as:
o Circuit functionality meeting spec requirements
o Thermal analysis and measurements
o Component selection and ratings
o DFMEA
o MTBF
o Layout review covering signal integrity, power integrity, manufacturing
o Hold test data reviews throughout development covering component and system
o DFX: manufacturing, test, supply chain
Collaborate with system and DVE teams to define requirements and measurements
o Power budgeting
o Battery and PSU fault settings
o Temperature performance / requirements
o Charging, discharging and user experience
o Review test plans
Manufacturing Verification
o Understand and approve test flow, conditions, coverage, fixtures
o Approve ESD prevention measures
o Review and approve IQC plan at Tier 1 manufacturer
o Review and approve SPC and improvement plans
Bugs
o 1st responder for PSU and battery assigned bugs
o Follow bug process, provide timely updates, and attend ship-room as needed
o Create bugs for issues found, changes needed, and work items
Safety plan to prevent:
o Shock, Fire, Burn for PSU
o Demonstrate 2nd level fault protection for batteries
Reliability
o Review test plans and results
o Identify any electrical weaknesses to be tested
Minimum requirements:
- BSEE or equivalent
- At least 10 years of experience, 5 years in designing power systems
- Proficiency with power PCB layout and analysis
- Experience designing for safety, including DFMEA
- Ability to analyze and simulate circuits to guarantee safety, performance and reliability
- Proficiency testing and debugging the high-power, analog and digital systems in smart batteries and PSUs or similar systems
- Demonstrated track record working with overseas suppliers, preferably in high-volume products
- Experience translating system-level requirements into component-level requirements
- Ability to contribute constructively to technical debate that leads to better designs
- Team-oriented approach with the desire to both teach and learn from others
- Excellent written and oral communication
