As an Electrical Engineer in the team, you will be responsible for all aspects of product-level hardware engineering related to product design. You will work with other in-house and contract engineers to define and document the product architecture, write technical specifications, lead design reviews, and manage development partners to deliver the final manufacturing-ready electrical design including microprocessors, analog circuitry, displays, user interfaces, and power subsystems. You will be responsible for following Microsoft's product development processes and best practices.

Qualified candidates must have understanding and some experience in designing and developing high volume consumer electronics products, from concept to manufacturing, Candidates should have a good understanding of PC architecture, knowledge of hardware product development processes and quality requirements of consumer electronic products, knowledge on hardware testing, and familiar with high volume manufacturing process and test.

As a member of the team, a successful candidate has effective written and oral communication skills, cross-organizational and some project management skills, and good technical design knowledge.

Responsibilities include
Circuit design and analysis
Partner with internal and external customers and cross-group functions like User Research, Mechanical Engineering, and Marketing to identify product requirements, drive product feature prioritization and trade-offs (cost/schedule/risk) and establish production release criteria.
Understand and be able to develop prototypes with digital and analog building blocks like MCUs, DC-DC converters, ADCs, DACs, PWMs I2C, SPI, etc. Manage bring-up, verification and debug of new hardware platforms.
Implement rapid prototypes for evaluation and demonstration of product ideas or technology concepts that integrate Microsoft hardware, firmware, software and services assets.


Skills and Qualifications
Demonstrated hardware engineering experience with microprocessor based systems and the ability to move from high level vision, to design implementation
Experience designing moderate to hiplexity hardware products.
Minimum 3 years of experience in hardware development and contributed to multiple product development cycles
3 years of experience with design tools (Spice, Orcad, Cadence Allegro/CIS); familiarity with PC and embedded systems architectures
Product level FW experience a plus
Experience with component selection.
Works well with cross functional groups including Industrial Design, Marketing, planning and user research.
Excellent communication skills
Knowledge and experience with standard communication protocols such as USB/I2C/SPI/UARTs preferred
BS in Electrical Engineering required and MS degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering even better :)
Must be enthusiastic, motivated and self-driven

Role & Opportunity:
The Surface development team is seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Electrical Engineer. The responsibilities of this position are focused on specifying, designing (schematic capture, PCB layout ), implementing and verifying the motherboard and other various sub-system boards that make up the Surface product. This work includes development of requirements and evaluating different solution for functionality, cost, and risk. The subsystems on the motherboard include (but are not limited to): High speed buses (front side bus, memory bus, PCIe bus, SATA bus, USB bus, I2S, etc.), memory, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, processors, audio/video, system clocking, power and thermal management, and misc. analog/digital circuitry. The position involves working closely with industrial designers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, software engineers, test engineers, component engineers, and program managers.

Qualifications:
Minimum BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or related field.
Minimum of 5+ years' experience contributing to the design and production of complex products in the electronics industry.
A solid understanding of core engineering principles, fundamental circuit design, and analytical techniques is required. Familiar with high speed design signal integrity issues, power distribution techniques & modern processors
Familiarity with embedded system architectures hardware and software, experience with implementation of high speed serial buses (SATA, PCIe, USB) and/or high speed parallel buses such as: memory bus (DDR2, GDDR3, etc.), CPU front side bus, Hyper transport, and/or voltage regulator/ power delivery design a plus.
Strong bench evaluation and in-lab debugging skills are required.
Hands-on board design experience, familiar with design tools including Cadence and Allegro.
Strong communication skills required, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms.
Must be able to plan work, and work to a plan adapting as necessary in a rapidly evolving environment.
Enthusiastic, motivated and self-driven.
Experience with firmware/UEFI or FPGAs desired
Experience with Cadence desired
Design for manufacturing and test experience is required. Experience with CDM partners is desirable.
The ability to comprehend and assimilate technical concepts across multiple disciplines is a plus.

The Surface team is looking for a passionate Electrical Engineer who is recognized as an expert of power subsystem design and power integrity analysis. The candidate will collaborate with members across the Product Development, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain organizations to deliver results that will ensure our hardware products continue to delight our customers and meet volume manufacturing cost and quality goals.

Major responsibilities include:
As part of the system engineering team, design and document power subsystem for PC and tablets, this includes the definition of system power tree architecture and power delivery mechanism, power rails design and optimization, component selection and qualifications.
Utilizing power simulation tools to perform power integrity and performance/efficiency simulations
Conduct post design validation on power subsystem performance.
Perform DFMEA analysis on system safety and failure modes.
Performing root cause analysis of issues related to system power delivery, power up sequencing, thermal and efficiency. This includes characterization, data analysis, providing conclusions and generating actionable reports.
Work with suppliers and internal team on reliability test development

Qualifications:

A solid understanding of core engineering principles, circuit design and analysis are required.
Minimum 10 years of experiencing designing, implementing, and shipping products of medium to hiplexity. Knowledge of PC or tablet architecture, products design and manufacturing is a big plus.
In-depth knowledge of analogue power circuitry design, very familiar with power components (VRs, DC/DC converters, FETs...), and hand on experience on power integrity analysis are required.
Familiar with power simulation tools and have some direct experiences in performing power integrity simulation is strongly desired.
Know-how with a common engineering CAD package (Cadence, OrCAD, etc.) and electronic test equipment for system validation.
Strong communication skills and must be able to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms, (English/Chinese bilingual is a plus)
Minimum BS in Electrical Engineering, MS is preferred.

The Surface team is looking for a senior Electrical Engineer who will participate the system motherboard design team. The responsibilities of this position include designing analog and digital mixed signal circuitry that may contain high performance CPU, GPU, high speed buses such as PCIe, DP, USB3, power management and delivery circuitries, DDR, SSD, and flash storage. Knowledge of complex motherboard designs is required. Past experiences in the areas of component and design tolerance analysis, power dissipation and failure modes effects and analysis are big pluses.

The qualified candidate must be self-motivated with proven track record in delivering world class high volume consumer products in the related fields. The position requires the ability to generate schematics and PCB layout requirements and to work with the CAD engineer to implement a board level circuit design. Candidate must be a good team player who is has strong communication skills, has the ability to learn quickly, analyze and implement new solutions. The position also involves coaching junior engineers, working closely with a cross functional team of mechanical engineers, test engineers, component engineers, manufacturing engineers, technologists, procurement, and program managers in multiple locations.

Qualifications:
A solid understanding of core engineering principles, circuit design and analysis are required.
Minimum 12 years of experiencing designing, implementing, and shipping products of medium to hiplexity. Knowledge of high volume consumer electronics design and manufacturing is required.
Hand on design and implementation experience with board level circuit design (transmission lines, SI, EMI, ESD), prototype, bring up and debug. Knowledge and experience with implementation of high speed serial busses such as USB, SATA, and PCIe is a big plus.
Know-how with a common engineering CAD package (Cadence, OrCAD, etc.) and electronic test equipment for system validation.
Experience with EMI, ESD testing for regulatory compliance.
Strong communication skills and must be able to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms, (English/Chinese bilingual is a plus)
Minimum BS in Electrical Engineering, MS is preferred.
