We are the design discipline within the Microsoft Data Platform Group, the second largest business within Microsoft. We work as an integrated product design team with product management and engineering - to envision, create, craft and deliver innovative and practical experience solutions for Microsoft's data platform in the areas of databases, big data, and data platform in the cloud.

The Data Platform design team is looking for an enthusiastic Design Researcher who is passionate about developers and data. As a senior researcher, you will plan and prioritize research across a large portfolio of data products and employ a wide range of research methodologies including field research, traditional usability tests, prototype testing, user model creation and survey research to help us create a deep understanding of what makes our users tick.

The ideal candidate will be able to work in a lean development environment supporting the release cadence of our product teams as well as helping define the strategic direction of a suite of data and developer products.

The Server and Management Studios (samstudios) team is currently seeking an experienced, motivated, creative, and customer-focused Senior Design Researcher. Our team drives the transformation of cloud computing to our customers and partners. We deliver solutions that are the backbone of enterprises and small businesses. Our charter is to bring useful, usable, and desirable design to Microsoft IT technologies and services.

In this role, you will work closely with an interdisciplinary research, design, and engineering team to define, and ultimately deliver the next generation of experiences for Remote Desktop, Azure RemoteApp, and Windows Server. As a Design Researcher, you will have the opportunity to employ a wide range of research methodologies including field research, traditional usability tests, prototype testing, survey, and social media & telemetry research. You will also have the opportunity to provide new methods, patterns, and practices that contribute to the UX community within the Cloud and Enterprise group (C+E) and Microsoft. Ultimately we're looking for someone to help evolve the discipline while influencing multiple product teams to make impactful, data-driven decisions.

The ideal candidate will have experience developing and executing innovative and proven research methods throughout all phases of software development as well as applying existing knowledge of cognitive science, human factors, and interaction design to make recommendations and solve design problems. Great oral and written communication skills are essential as you will be working closely with Designers, Engineers, Program Managers, and other Researchers to garner support for research plans and ensure action is taken on results in a highly collaborative work environment.

Requirements:
- A minimum of a BA or MA/MS in Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction or a related field, OR significant industry experience.
- Proven experience designing and running original experimental research on software products (Enterprise experience a plus)
- Demonstrated experience in the application of research to the development of interactive systems, information architectures, and UI taxonomies.
- Demonstrated ability to visualize and present rich research data simply and clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to articulate the implications of research finding in clear and compelling generalized models or frameworks.
- Statistical analysis for social science skills - familiarity with parametric and non-parametric statistics as well as one or more software programs to facilitate analysis (Excel, SPSS, etc.)
- 5+ years of industry experience conducting user research and driving tangible outcomes with product teams.

Desired qualifications:
- Experience with telemetry/instrumented data analysis, particularly in application to design iteration.
- Experience working on cross-device experiences - mobile, tablet, and laptop/desktop.
- Experience building and managing a sustainable base of design research knowledge that is leveraged across design and engineering teams.
- Skills in the development of rapid prototypes and/or automated data collection tools.
- Track record of collaborating across disciplines (design, engineering) to drive change into products.
- Proven ability to work within tight timelines and with excellent project management skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; experience presenting to executive-level audiences

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and conduct a range of formative and iterative research methods applicable to all product stages from conception to release
- Develop comprehensive research strategies to drive data into decisions across the product lifecycle
- Collaborate closely with design, engineering, and business partners during all steps of research
- Translate research findings into actionable recommendations and deliver them in compelling ways
- Triangulate multiple data sources into integrated insights
- Communicate and evangelize research results to engineering and business teams and upper management
- Influence upper management with a persuasive user data driven stance on difficult user experience and/or business issues
- Practice and help evolve the team's research techniques and toolset to work effectively within a rapid product development cadence
- Align product experiences to the broader developer and Microsoft ecosystem
- As a senior researcher, demonstrate leadership and passion in all the above points

REQUIREMENTS
- An advanced degree in human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, behavioral science, or related field or equivalent experience
- A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in user research with a proven track record
- Thorough knowledge and experience of a range of UX research approaches and methodologies
- Strong analytical and synthesis skills with a proven ability to turn research results into product insights
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence a range of audiences from targeted impact with teams to broad impact with executives
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
- Familiarity with modern developer platforms and ecosystems a plus
