Since the beginning of Bing, we set out to do search differently, we believe in empowering people with knowledge and we live this mission every day. Bing is about helping you find and do what you want, when you want it, wherever you are. We started on this mission in 2009 with the Bing search engine, competing against a strong incumbent. We have always known that we cannot out-Google Google, but we have also recognized that in order to compete, our fundamental product and underlying engineering must be strong and we must have scale. That is what we have been focused on building in the last three years. We have come a long way: from a distant #3 to a credible alternative in a global two way race, a promising consumer brand, vastly improved search quality and fundamental infrastructures, and we're integrating an innovative experience across Microsoft Apps and Services, including Office, Skype, Windows, and XBox.

The Bing Local Search team is looking for an accomplished Program Manager to help us deliver the best possible local search experience in Bing for the United States and other global markets. Our team is chartered with integrating local search experiences across 1st party platforms like Windows, Skype, Office, Maps and including Bing.com. You will be responsible for defining scenarios, metrics and user experience for local search integration as well as ensuring partner dependencies are met in a timely manner. This position will allow you to learn more about how Search works and understand Bing's technology stack end-to-end. You will develop deep expertise in web-scale distributed processing, machine learning, data analytics and big data, and you will have the opportunity to partner with multiple engineering and research teams across Microsoft.

Skills and Experience Required:

- Proven track record with Program Manager core competencies
- Strong customer focus with ability to define high value and engaging task completion scenarios
- History of successfully coordinating cross-team projects and collaborating with partners
- Ability to make trade-offs, negotiate, and build consensus, all while keeping project goals and priorities in mind
- Strong communication skills to effectively land decisions across, partner teams, leadership and organizational boundaries
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent

Our team has a culture that is agile, aims high, and takes pride in excellent software craftsmanship. If you are capable and passionate about taking on challenges like these, then this role will provide you the scope and opportunity to have a significant impact across Bing's local search results.

Since Bing launched in June of 2009 it is the only search engine to have gained ground against Google in the US and today we serve almost 6 billion queries a month in the US. We're not just stopping there; we're continuously attracting new users, we want to win globally, and we are changing how people think about Microsoft and Search. Our missions statement is to "empower people and organizations to do more with ambient intelligence" and we're moving beyond serving web results and are increasingly becoming the intelligence engine behind all Microsoft products. We have a long road ahead and we can't take on such an ambitious goal without your help!

Our Group: Core Relevance

"The ultimate is computers that learn. So called deep learning which started at Microsoft and is now being used by many researchers looks like a real advance that may finally learn. It has already made a big difference in video and audio recognition - more progress in the last 3 years than ever before."

Machine Learning is quickly becoming an essential skill for all participants in our profession. Don't get left behind!

The Core Relevance PM team is responsible for applying machine learning technology to solve real user problems. We are one of the few teams working directly on moving a line item on the OSD President executive score card. We are focused on returning the best web results for every query on Bing.com in the US market and we're expanding our scope to think globally, and pivoting beyond Bing.com to becoming the intelligence engine to power other Microsoft services such as Windows, Xbox, Office, and Windows Phone. We're powering features on Cortana and soon hope to ship features that Office feel like magic. Today our technology improves the productivity of 100 million people but by collaborating with the rest of Microsoft we hope to reach 1 billion people!

The Core Relevance PM team is a small group of passionate individuals who are on the cutting edge of computer science, experimenting quickly, shipping fast, doing complex data analysis, and combining science and engineering. We cherish the culture of small incubation teams that operate very similar to a start-up. Most successful PMs in the relevance team are often those that are not afraid to disrupt the norm and innovate in areas where others think there is not much opportunity. If you love building things, algorithms, big data mining, machine learning, data sciences and analysis, and other artificial intelligence technologies this team is for you. We have gone far beyond where academia is today because of our unsurpassed access to the data, technology, world class people, and technological resources; there are very limited number of places in the world where you can work on a feature and immediately see it in action and get live feedback.

Key Responsibilities
In your first three months on the job you will be expected to own a relevance opportunity and work with some of the best engineers to deliver it to users. Specifically you will need to: (1) do data analysis to discover a relevance opportunity for a user experience, (2) define the measurement for what a successful solution looks like, (3) brainstorm multiple solutions to solve that problem, (4) build, experiment, and measure these solutions, and (5) ship the best performing of those solutions. Examples of some of relevance problems we solve are:

How do you develop an algorithm to correctly spell {emansypashun} to {emancipation}?
What is the perfect set of results for a query like {Andromeda} where there so many interpretations such as the galaxy, the TV show, and the woman from mythology?
How do we know when someone searches for {dot} they mean "department of transportation" and they want the one closest to their current location?
What is the right machine learning algorithm to apply to combine thousands of features and signals to optimize for multiple target functions?
How do we find the best places for { kid friendly restaurants in nyc } ?
How do you make these complex algorithms run in milliseconds and across thousands of machines so that they are easily maintainable?
What is the best answer to show for { What bus can you take from Newark to hillside? } and how do you surface it?

Skills and Qualifications
We are seeking gifted Program Managers who are self motivating, have a propensity for action, familiar with or can quickly learn about deeply algorithmic topics, and have amazing design intuition. We have to scale our algorithms to billions of documents and petabytes of data. This is the cutting edge of computer science - extremely technical and extremely data driven. We're looking for the cream of the crop inside and outside of Microsoft - PMs who drive for results, aren't afraid to cross boundaries by coding or designing mockups, who can fluently cross the language barriers of technologies and customers, have a start up mentality, work closely with Microsoft Research, are extremely creative, can build and mentor teams of high powered PMs, and who want to win in the biggest battleground on the web today.

Besides the core PM skills such as leadership and communication, a fundamental skill to be successful here is a great problem solver. You will be tasked on solving problems that no one in the world has solved before. You must have a degree in computer science. A background in machine learning, algorithms, large scale systems, and statistics is a plus but not required.
