The Microsoft Xbox Team is responsible for a wide array of products including Xbox 360 and Xbox One game consoles, Kinect, high-performance optics, and gaming accessories. We are looking for an Optical Design Engineer to enable world-class consumer electronic products.

The candidate will drive the design of optical systems, sub-systems and components into high volume consumer products and will have demonstrated experience in designing, modeling and shipping complex opto-mechanical assemblies and imaging systems.

As a successful candidate, you enjoy leading cross functional teams and driving system-level and sub-system designs through fast-paced product development cycles. A strong mix of technical breadth and depth allow you to work cross-functionally to incorporate your optical designs with complex mechanical assemblies, image sensors, electronics and software to bring to life compelling and innovative user experiences. Walking into a large retail store and seeing a product on the shelf that you've taken end-to-end, from concept through detailed design and into high-volume manufacture, drives and excites you.

Your work experience includes a minimum of four years in optical product design, with at least two years in the consumer product industry designing optical systems. You are knowledgeable with the optical, material, thermal and reliability properties of plastic and glass. Additionally, you are expert in the design and modeling of injection molded opto-mechanical parts, including lenses, diffractive optics and camera modules.

As an expert in optics, you are well-versed in: the optical properties of CMOS image sensors; lens design fundamentals including aberration theory; the physics of light propagation and diffraction; polarization; stray light mitigation and the scattering and interaction of light from various surfaces and materials.

A track record of innovation and experience in selecting material and components to achieve cost targets is desired. The establishment of specifications and written test plans, including the development of test procedures to verify your opto-mechanical designs are integral to the position.

An ability to manage complex projects and CM's, against development timeline needs, is required, and your excellent communication skills allow you to work seamlessly with teams across various engineering functions and geographies. As such, you are willing to travel internationally at times to support design and manufacturing activities.

Qualification Summary:

-M.S. in optical engineering, electrical engineering or physics, with specialty in optical design.
-Four years of optical product development experience, with at least two years designing optical components and assemblies in high volume consumer electronic devices.
-Program experience on at least one optical consumer electronics products that successfully reached volume production.
-In-depth knowledge of opto-mechanical tolerance analysis and lens design.
-Five years' experience with both sequential and non-sequential ray-tracing packages.
-Demonstrated ability to drive complex system trade-offs involving optical design by partnering across engineering teams.
