MCIO's Energy Strategy and Research team leads the development of energy strategy for Microsoft's data centers. We are looking for a program lead to assist with the planning, coordination, and oversight of energy generation projects, including renewable power purchase agreements, equity investments, and the financial structuring of Microsoft's on-site generation portfolio. We are looking for a strategic thinker who will interact closely with many constituents including engineering teams, finance as well as with outside vendors and regulators to manage the evaluation, development, and financing of energy projects. This position requires knowledge of electricity markets, energy regulations, and project finance with the ability to apply that knowledge to global environments. This position also requires strong project management and problem solving skills. The candidate should have a track record that matches our philosophy of leading by innovation, have a detailed understanding of both regulatory and commercial sides of the energy business, and have the ability to deliver against aggressive deadlines with a driving passion for cost reduction and highly scalable solutions. The candidate will need to understand the dynamics of the energy sector and our own unique position in the sector. The candidate will need to be able to identify key market conditions, regulations, and market structures to help evaluate potential savings opportunities for implementing new utility-scale renewable and on-site energy projects.

Core responsibilities will include the following:
Maintain pipeline of renewable project opportunities
Evaluate project economics and make recommendations for purchase agreements and asset investments
Work with internal finance teams to develop capital efficient investment opportunities
Develop financial analyses that support PPA, project development, and investment decisions
Support global investment and development strategy for generation projects, both utility-scale and distributed energy projects
Manage existing portfolio of generation projects, including oversight of settlements, and monetization of project attributes
Utilize internal and external market analyses and price forecasts to quickly assess most advantageous project opportunities
Deep understanding of the power industry
Understanding of technical aspects of wholesale and retail power markets
Experience in reviewing, developing, or financing large-scale generation projects.
Ideally have experience in US and international power markets
Experience working with banks, project developers, or utilities in the financing and development of new renewable and thermal energy projects
Have a clear understanding of the project development and financing process
Understand impacts of various constructs for wholesale and retail power markets on the monetization of project attributes
Electricity procurement experience in both regulated and deregulated markets Clear understanding of markets for demand response, capacity, environmental attributes Strong analytical capabilities to support review of utility tariffs, wholesale market structures, power contracts, and fundamentals of global power markets Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial, hands-on spirit Team player with deep cross-group collaboration and project management skills, with experience developing efficient work plans for complex projects involving many groups, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Advanced conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving abilities Ability to manage challenging expectations effectively and resolve conflicts efficiently Exceptional interpersonal and communications (verbal and written) skills A self-directed individual with a relentless drive to overachieve.

Bachelor's degree in finance, economics or engineering Strong business case development, analysis and problem solving skills Excellent creative thinking skills with emphasis on developing innovative solutions to solve complex problems that may not have one clear answer Strong communication skills General understanding of IT infrastructure, data centers and cloud services.

Five to ten years of experience with demonstrated excellence in energy project finance, development or procurement Understanding and experience working in energy markets, including demand response, rate design and/or capacity markets
